14. Cincinnati

The Bearcats had a great week, knocking off previously unbeaten Mississippi State and then rocking UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. Those two wins are more indicative of the Bearcats than maybe the way in which they started the Xavier game earlier in the month. Cincinnati gets a breather with two more buy games this week before starting the American on New Year’s Eve against Memphis. Expect Cincinnati to re-emerge as a top 10 team sooner than later.

17. Wichita State

The Shockers couldn’t handle Trae Young and the upstart Sooners in Wichita. Maybe this drop is too much. Maybe not. Wichita State is still an American contender and a team that can go deep in March. The biggest concern for Wichita was the slow start, getting down 54-39 at the half. Wichita State had given up more than 66 points in only two previous games. That’s not the norm for Gregg Marshall’s squad.

29. Houston

Big drop for the Cougars after falling at LSU. But don’t be too dismayed. Teams are moving all over the Power 36 by virtue of what is happening. This is still an NCAA tournament team and one that will be right with Wichita State and Cincinnati (and SMU too) for the American title. Houston can continue to improve its profile by knocking off Providence in Connecticut on Wednesday before league play begins on Dec. 28.

34. SMU

The Mustangs move up a bit based on losses by others above. But another huge test comes calling Monday night when Boise State visits Dallas. The Broncos could have easily made a play to be in the Power 36 and a win over SMU on the road would certainly put them here. Shake Milton continues to shine for the Mustangs, regardless of the competition. The hype in the American has been rightfully for Cincinnati, Wichita State and most recently Houston. But SMU will be in the mix within that group by season’s end.

UConn's RPI is about 150. We aren't even a quality win.

Katz isn't the brightest bulb as it relates to rankings. Just another flawed mouth piece who would get crushed in Vegas.

How many wins do we need to not be a bubble team??

.500 or better vs. Top 50 teams and 10 top 100 wins with zero to one sub 150 losses. Now go look at our schedule.

With him and Obama gone, no more picking the brackets in the White House.

Funny how SMU lost a HOF coach, had a tournament ban, plays in the AAC yet does not complain and still manages to be competitive.

Andy Katz's Power 36: Who's in the NCAA tournament? (Jan. 15)

7. Cincinnati (8): All the Bearcats are doing lately is winning. Cincinnati is going about its business, keeping teams below 60 points in four-straight games. The Bearcats had one game last week, and they trounced South Florida on the road. Games at UCF Tuesday and then at home against East Carolina Saturday should continue a similar narrative for UC.

8. Wichita State (9): The Shockers are getting pushed as evident of the three-point win at Tulsa. That’s good. But they’re also winning in the American and have no blemishes. Wichita State blew out East Carolina by 35 earlier in the week. The next two games against SMU Wednesday and at Houston Saturday should go a long way toward telling the league about where the Shockers will be in the standings before facing Cincinnati for the first time on Feb. 18.

Other teams of note:

1. Villanova (1): Destroyed Xavier by 24. Handled St. John’s by seven on the road. Nova right now is your lock to be a No. 1 seed and make the Final Four if you’re ready to pick one in mid-January. Games at Georgetown Wednesday and at UConn Saturday will continue to enhance this team’s resume.

10. Arizona (13): The Wildcats weren’t messing around after losing at Colorado. Sean Miller challenged this squad and they responded by beating Oregon State by nine and then holding off Oregon by seven. The road swing to the Bay Area is next at Cal Wednesday and then at Stanford Saturday, which should be a challenge considering the Cardinal is tied with 'Zona at the top of the standings.

18. Rhode Island (25): The Rams are going to win the A-10 regular-season title. I said it. I believe it. I don’t see anything derailing them from doing it. URI is the class of the league. They had a great week by winning at St. Louis and then beating St. Bonaventure by 14 at home, the same Bonnies who were supposed to challenge them for the title but now have three losses in the league to the Rams’ zero. A rising UMass is on tap Wednesday before a road game at Dayton, that always proves to be difficult. Still, the Rams will win the league. Book it.

19. Auburn (26): Bruce Pearl’s crew could have easily stumbled after opening the SEC with wins at Tennessee and over Arkansas. But no. This thin, but spirited group went out and beat Ole Miss and won at Mississippi State to remain undefeated (4-0) in the SEC. The Tigers go to rival Alabama Wednesday before hosting Georgia. Pearl said on March Madness 365 that the Tigers could win every remaining game or lose each one. The line is thin, and the Tigers are the right side as of now.

Funny how SMU lost a HOF coach, had a tournament ban, plays in the AAC yet does not complain and still manages to be competitive.

They do? Losses to Northern Iowa, Western Kentucky, Tulane and Temple are not embarrassing at all, mediocre schools, but they stain that nice early season win over Arizona.

I would not call this thriving however. They have a 2-3 AAC record.

Then you look at their NCAA record since joining: 0-2. Lost to an 11th seed last year. That's worse than UConn, who won as an 9th seed in 2016. Don't need to mention 2014.

SMU was thriving in the AAC, but the timeline for losing a HOF coach (who was a short termer anyway, unlike Calhoun) and their ban (which wasn't as bad as UConn's because the UConn players like Oriakhi got to leave and play right away) happened after UConn's. They may be entering the AAC doldrums now. Sure looks like it, because they are underperforming and they've got talent like Shake Milton still on that team.
