Andre Drummond averaged 7.9ppg and 7.6 boards in his first NBA season. Many here predicted he would far surpass that and be a much better player than he was at UConn.

Unquestionably he was improved and putting up those numbers in limited minutes at a higher level bodes well for his future. Also unquestionably he was picked too late as thus far last year's draft class has underperformed. But that was the risk he took coming out of UConn un-polished and after failing to dominate/truly excel at the collegiate level.

Drummond averaged 10PPG and 7.6 boards & 2.7 blocks at UConn. Would he have been the #1 pick in this years draft?! ABSOLUTELY YES. That was my point last year which was unfortunately rendered moot by both UConn's post-season ban and Drummond declaring for the draft.

Drummond salary as #9 pick for first 4 years $10,659,171
Drummond salary if #1 pick in 2013 for 3 years $16,691,760

So he cost himself $6MM by declaring for the draft last year. That'll grow to 7.7M if include 4th year. Of course he gets to his 5th year sooner which will immediately close that gap (I assume he'll make at least 13M/per which is 7M more than Anthony Bennett will make that year). Then it comes down to under which scenario he plays more seasons, more productive, higher salaried etc.. - all way too hypothetical. For example subjectively there is an argument that as a #1 pick he makes more in endorsements, carries a cache of perceived value etc...

Incidentally if Drummond stays he'd be a Cavalier and arguably winning championships with LeBron and Kyrie in 2015 & beyond...

So it is his fault Charlotte is stupid and didn't take him at #2? I think Golden State and Portland fans are the only ones truly content with passing on Drummond. And what if his back stress fracture happened at UConn? All of a sudden you have the broken nose, busted ankle, bad back, etc. Would have been Noel'ed.

If youre a projected top 10 or lottery pick, you make the jump...Maybe theres a small chance he chooses to stay if there was no tournament ban but 99% of the time the smart move is to declare for the draft. A player cant base their decision on being the #1 pick or not because as we saw with this years draft you never know.

Even with limited minutes, he was constantly in the discussion for rookie of the year. Now with his one year of experience, he's probably ready to make a huge jump in his 2nd year and really make an impact. He made the right decision.

A bird in the hand. He was ready to jump, physically and mentally. the $ of the NBA, even at "only" $10 mil is way more than he would have gotten at UCONN (in fact, about $10 mil more!). I get that maybe in the long run, in pure $ it might have been better for him, but we have no idea what his or his families financial situation was like and I probably would have made the same decision...

I guess AD was supposed to know that the Cavs would have the number 1 pick in the 2013 draft and then was he supposed to call Lebron and ask him if he will join the Cavs in 2015. He got a jumpstart to his career, stop thinking about yourself, I would love to have seen AD stay but he made the right decision.

Had one of the best PER averages in all of basketball and finished 4th in rookie of the year. He will definitely start this year and yes he made the right decision

I get the point of the OP, but let's see how the 2nd contract goes. Any difference in 1st contract cash will be negated the instant he signs his 2nd contract. Something he is one year closer to doing by leaving when he did. Add the fact that he ended up with a team that seems to have an effective plan for his development puts me in the right decision camp.

Exactly. He started his professional career earlier, which gives him an extra year of earning power. It's also reasonable to believe that his learning curve was sped up by spending last year developing against NBA players as opposed to battling Tyler Olander in practice, which will help once the second contract comes around.

Comparing the differences in rookie contracts (even with 20/20 hindsight) doesn't even come close to evaluating the true financial impact of his decision to leave.

Thread is so so dumb. 8 pt 8 reb 2 blocks in 24 min is crazy good for a rookie. Who in EARTH thought he would have better stats then that?

If the kid can straighten out his free throws (talk to duncan please, just get to 60%) he will be a yearly allstar for a decade.

This is the age old question, "What's worth more, 1 in hand or 1.001 in the bush?" His life is going to be pretty darn good with the choice he made.

And let's be honest, he learned more about his chosen profession last year in Detroit than he would have in Storrs.

AD is in a perfect situation in Detroit. They are not rushing him and I believe it will pay dividends in a long and prosperous career.
