I addressed why I thought Jackson State is so successful in rebounding in my opening statement in the comment section of the analysis Here is what I said there: "They get an astounding 43.4 rebounds per game...probably there are a lot of rebounds to be had as it is a function of teams including Jackson State shooting the ball poorly from the field." After thinking about it I bring up hoopsnloops32 said in their post. "Jackson State gets 55.8% of the available rebounds, UConn gets 54.6% of the available rebounds. They are a slightly better rebounding team than us against weaker competition." To say they are a slightly better rebounding team than us against weaker competition. I feel the need to clarify or add to this statement. They are not a better rebounding, per se. They get 55.8 percent of the available rebounds while UConn gets 54.6 percent...while this delta appears to be small as it measures only the percent of available rebounds but not really the number of available rebounds, it is deceptive because the shooting of Jackson State as well as their opponents in the SWAC conference relative to UConn's is poor (UCONN - 1050 - 2101 for 50%; JACKSON STATE - 780 - 1945 for 40%) This means that Jackson State has 214 more misses than UConn...which translates into more opportunities to rebound. On the other hand, the argument can be made that even though Jackson State averages more rebounds per game than UConn does, the rebounding edge is a lot closer than the statistics show. This is because of the comparative weakness of the SWAC conference. Jackson State's rebounding advantage per game over its opponents is 2.5 rebounds per game. Jackson State grabs 43.4 rebounds per game while their opponents average 34.3 rebounds per game for a differential of 9.1. UConn averages 38.8 rebounds compared to their opponents who average 32.2 for a differential of 6.6. A deeper dive into the statistics and what they mean it becomes quite clear that if UConn were playing in the SWAC chances are they would be able to get more rebounds than they are getting in the Big East Conference. The same can be said regarding Jackson State; If Jackson State was playing in the Big East Conference chances are they would be averaging less rebounds per game than they are in the SWAC.
