I can't believe people are getting their panties in a twist about the name America 12. What else could they name it? It's not a regional conference (like I wish it was), the teams are all over the place. That's a fine league name.

In all seriousness, though, if the reasons that I mentioned earlier aren't enough for you to dislike the name, then I'm guessing that there is no name that would put you off. So I'll leave it at that...

So we know what you don't like, how about adding what you do? What name can encompass the make-up of this conference without incorporating those very things?

Yeah, I've been giving a lot of thought to this one, and I haven't come up with anything yet. I don't like being the guy that says, "It sucks" without having something else to back it up with. And for those that know me and how I post here, I'm the more positive type by design (maybe to a fault).

The things that I was thinking about encompassed an eastern flavor. We may not be northeastern anymore, but if you drew a line down the middle of the US map, all of our members are in the east still (I think even Tulsa might find its way to the east in a true line of demarcation). But you would want to have the word be "Eastern" and not "East", as many have already pointed out that the joke "LEast" will continue to be used and you need to avoid that. So, something like "Eastern Athletic Conference (EAC)" or something along those lines. No numbers. No "LEast" jokes. No use of the word "American" or "National" or "USA"...

I guess that why there's an ECAC (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference)... I just knew ECA because my niece goes to Bishop Feehan HS.

Alright, so how about the following:

1) Eastern Athletics Association (EAA) - generic, but no obvious jokes.
2) Eastern Collegiate Conference (ECC) - lines up well with a battle against the ACC.
3) Eastern Mountain Conference (EMC) - not very good, but the students can feel smart by quoting e=mc^2, we will have a new corporate sponsor with Eastern Mountain Sports, and we'll be in direct conflict with the Mountain West.

Other thoughts or ideas?

I'm not against the number thing, its a brand ala the Big Ten, they are still the Big Ten no matter how many teams they add, it serves as a reminder of what was more than what is. How many people still refer to the PAC 12 as the PAC 10, I know I do, because that brand is ingrained in us, it will take years of the PAC 12 to move beyond that. And I like to believe we will be gone before that becomes an issue for us in this conference so in that respect it's their problem down the road not ours.

I respect that. But let me say this about the numbers thing; the Big10 and Pac10 got away with it because they had so many years of tradition and big-time programs to market with. We don't have either of those luxuries. On top of the fact that we are looking at a number that does not even reflect the membership number in the conference! We have 11 teams with Navy on board in 2015. To me, it's not starting from a "place of strength" to market oneself as something they are hoping to be in two years time.

I certainly don't have the best idea to run with in terms of conference name, but it is beyond clear to me that the A-12 is not the right one...

I already like Big Atlantic, Great Eastern, East Coast, Conference of Eastern Universities, and even Eastern 12 over America 12. It's funny that you randomly put together five names via a template and spit out five better choices than what was floated out the other day by the league...

Just sat staring at the map like a mo, what about something that takes into consideration the hybrid that the conference is, something like Atlantic-Gulf Conference or similar along those lines?

A hybrid would work, although it's tough to use the Atlantic as part of it, since that would be limited to Navy, Temple, and UConn (if you ignored the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, and Long Island Sound respectively), as well as the fact that Cincy would feel left out of it. But still, a hybrid name could be the answer to reflect the hybrid conference. Eastern Heartland? Appalachian ___ (a play on the opposite of the Mountain West).

This is the type of stuff that keeps me up at night...

It is also sad that the leaders of a multi-million dollar athletic conference, the universities then represent and the marketing specialists they hire can do better than random word generation.

No wonder we are where we are and college athletics is so buggered up.

Cincy, Memphis, and possibly Tulsa would be the only ones not linked to those two bodies of water, and Cincy being left out doesn't bother me, they've been doing nothing but touting how great they would be in CR over us anyway. CT does actually touch the Atlantic, if only for a tiny piece. That Eastern Heartland is interesting as well.
