What the hell has he done to put the team, university or fans in this position (and I would love to hear what this position is) every year?

I'm not sure you realize that this program is a somewhat delicate position. Have you heard that it is on NCAA probation? And that we are probably not eligible to play in the NCAA and Big East tournament making next year nothing more than an extended exhibition season. The sooner the had coaching situation is clarified the better.

There's a difference between acknowledging your eventual retirement and keeping everyone in limbo from April to September every offseason. It might be apparent to us that he's coming back, but then why doesn't he just come out and say: "I'm coming back unless I explicitly say otherwise. Enough with the speculation and rumor."

The only people that need to be certain he is coming back next year are the current players and recruits. Nothing he says in the media matters as long as he is giving kids his word that he will be coaching for the next X years. If he tells a recruit "I will be coaching next year" and another coach says "Hey, he hasn't made it public that he's going to coach next year," I have a feeling the recruit would take Jim's word for it.

Also, the guy is under a contract. If anything should require going public about, it would be his retirement, not his return. He has already said multiple times that he will be here until all the sanctions are behind us. When we have 13 scholarships and are eligible for the tournament, then I will entertain the idea that he might not come back.

I almost forgot. The end is near, we are deep in an abyss that we will never be able to climb out of.

It was careless of me to believe that a one year post season ban is something that we could ever recover from.

Instead of reading "signs", how about JC cutting the crap and making an announcement?

Ummm, weeks ago he was on Fatman's show and he said he was staying and being a part of the program after retirement.

this is the stuff I'm talking about. And he has said as much on different occasions if anyone is paying attention

Ummm, the article today based on a Friday conversation said "Jim Calhoun was not ready to make a definitive statement."

He knows he needs to announce something soon. I'm not convinced that staying is the best thing for the program. If he's back he absolutely needs to urge Blaney to retire. Let's see what Kevin can do during the inevitable health related absences. But the constant uncertainty that will persist if JC returns remains a concern.

He is not hand picking his successor.
Not a chance in hell that he is hand picking his successor. This administration doesn't do it that way. And this administration doesn't "owe" Calhoun anything. In fact, one could argue that he's been nothing but a problem since Herbst and certainly arrived.

LOL, yeah, a problem--national championship. Susan Herbst knows best about top ranked basketball. Knows more than the presidents of Michigan, Indiana, NC State, Texas, etc., and hundreds of other schools that have been trying to find a Jim Calhoun over the decade. Poppcok.

Yes, one could argue that. It would make them a complete idiot, but they could argue it.

Well if not for Jim Calhoun, the Uconn AD job would certainly pay Warde Manuel an awful lot less than it currently does.

He only deliberated that once, and for good reason, IMO. Look for announcement in a week or two.

When Emanuel was introduced, Calhoun was just beginning his leave of absence. Then his first order of business was dealing with the APR issues of the men's basketball team, then with Calhoun saying he wants to "name his successor," and yet another rejection of the APR, and finally Calhoun playing his annual "will he or won't he" game. Herbst has been dealing with the same issues. What has Calhoun done under thier watch to warrant special treatment?

He got Susan Herbst a free trip to the White House last year. And regarding the "will he or won't he" game, Calhoun has already met with Manuel on the issue of him returning. They both know the answer.

Oh well, then...a free trip to the White House...I'm sure she'll give Calhoun whatever he wants then...So Geno will probably be able to name her successor in a few years, since he'll likely give her a few such trips...

I'm not saying that Calhoun should be able name his successor. I'm just responding to your question of "what has Calhoun done during the new administration's watch?" You seem to have forgotten that Dr. Herbst got to experience meeting the President, a parade through Hartford, a whole bunch of huge donations to the athletic program, and everything else that comes with winning a National Championship in her first year at Uconn. All thanks to Jim Calhoun and his players.

Do you really think Herbst is so dumb as to try to take this on by herself? She's the President, she has a school to run. She's not going to try to put her imprint on the bball program as though that would somehow recommend her to become the President of Harvard. This is nothing more than a nuisance for her job, and she will choose the route that keeps UConn bball on top in the most expedient manner, the one with the least friction. Whether that involves Calhoun or not, only she knows. but if you believe that she's going to leave it all up to Warde Manuel--as though Manuel possessed some insights that hundreds of ADs all over the nation do not--I'd say you're mistaken.

I figured that coach Calhoun would not abandon ship. The guy is a fighter. He will not leave us hanging. He will make sure we have a great replacement before stepping down. I never doubted it for a second. This is our coach!!! Love the dude.

Of course she's not going to go out and interview the candidates, except probably the final one, but she will set the terms and Emanuel will run the show.they are not going to simply rubber stamp Calhoun's choice. Have youwatched what ADs do in these searches, or for that matter college presidents? this is arguably the most highly visible position at the University. Of course they are going to be involved. And this is the kind of hire that can make or break an AD's reputation...no AD is turning that over to thecoach who is retiring with whom he has no relationship of note and who has had at best modest success with his assistants moving to higher profile positions.

The AD will go out and undercut the old regime, hire his own guy, and if it doesn't work, the AD's acuity is questioned, or he could get input from someone who actually knows something about UConn basketball, go with the recommendation, and if it doesn't work out, he gets a mulligan--for obvious reasons. Administrators adopt the path of least resistance. It's the reason we have bigtime college sports in the first place. If they actually considered these sorts of decisions as anything other than a nuisance (ever talk to a college president about the sports programs?) they probably would be making very different decisions. Board of Trustees + Alumni + the fact that bball is only 1% of the school budget = let's make the decision that's going to cause me the least amount of headache in my real job.

That would be entirely rational. But we know for a fact it is not how flagship state universities work.
