I may be in the minority but I never thought for a second that he wouldn't return.

I still believe that he will complete his current contract (2 more years) and I think its a 50/50 shot that he stays another year beyond that.

As long as his health is ok I couldn't imagine him walking away, especially after the NCAA kicked our program in the teeth. He wants to get us back on solid ground before he rides into the sunset.

Instead of reading "signs", how about JC cutting the crap and making an announcement?

Why rush? It's not like it really matters with recruiting. Plus, the NCAA decision came two days ago. Give the guy a week or two.

Looking back on it now i still wish he just retired after last years championship. Nothing will ever match what happened in 2011 and hes had to deal with a lot of BS since then.

A week or two would fine. A repeat of last year would not.

i'm sure he's thought it through and has solid reasons for handling it exactly the way he is handling it. can you imagine any other plausible scenario? might it be forgetfulness? laziness? spite? no motivation? procrastination? failure to understand the importance of making an announcement? i mean come on, man. really.

Yeah, I don't get why anyone thought he'd retire in the next year or two unless it's for health reasons. He's like the Terminator, he's tough as steel and keeps going. He's not going to leave the program in its current state. He'll stick around untill he feels the program is stable enough.

How do we know? Maybe the program is at a crossroads. Maybe it's all downhill from here on out. Maybe there is plenty of fuel left in the tank. Another exciting run at a championship. The future is uncertain, but I know not to count out JC.

Obviously I could be proven totally wrong if JC decides that he has had enough and that his health can't withstand the grind anymore, but I have never doubted that he would be back. He would never leave UConn in the current state the program is in. Every quote he gives about the future of the program shows how badly he wants the program to be in position to continue to have the success that they have had under him. Leaving now would go against everything he's said on the topic.

I don't think he wants to leave the program he built in the shape it is now. I think he wants turn over the keys when the team has 13 scholarships, is eligible for the postseason, and has a practice facility built or almost built. I don't think he wants to see what built up left in a precarious state. Hopefully 2 years from now UConn has a practice facility built, 13 scholarships, is post season eligible, a seasoned Kevin Ollie on the sidelines, and good young team. Then Calhoun can hand the team over to Ollie with a chance to succeed, or leave the team in an state that will be attractive to top coaches like Shaka Smart.

I know and agree that he's earned the right when to announce, but its just unfortunate that we have to speculate, with all that's going on right now. These troubled waters sure can use some calming.

And other news on the team.

All Signs Point To Jim Calhoun Staying At UConn, Hartford Courant
I hate to say it, but given Calhoun's poor health, had he been forced out, it could probably have quite literally turned into the death penalty for him. That's what happened to JoePa at Penn State football. And many years ago, Bear Bryant may have left of his own accord, but it still happened to him. I hate to be so frank, but Calhoun's going to coach as long as he can because he knows that once he leaves, his health is going to rapidly deteriorate.

Lung cancer was probably more of a factor in Joe Pa's death than his firing but this is actually something that (unfortunately) gets thrown around a lot.

I think the rest of your post is pretty off the wall. Essentially, you are saying that Calhoun is going to hang on to the job for as long as he can so he doesn't die.

I'm pretty sure you don't even believe this.

If we weren't speculating on this what would we be doing in mid April?

JC has his reasons to do it this way. Big deal. We don't need to know about every underpinning within the program.

there is no doubt in my mind, there never was

if you ever really listen to him speak, he makes it clear he's not leaving until the program is on solid ground and his hand picked successor is in place

the media is just not good at comprehending situations or understanding personalities. Throw in the fact that they're scumbags selling hyperbole, and you have the whole country actually thinking he might retire

I actually kind of agree with you here. He should answer the question unequivocally each and every time he's asked so there can be no doubt about his intentions.

Is there any other coach in college sports for whom, at the end of every season, it's always a question whether or not he's going to return? Where the default state is "unknown"?

Does anybody else find it ridiculous that JC puts the team, the university, and the fans (not that anybody should give a about us) in this position every offseason?

What the hell has he done to put the team, university or fans in this position (and I would love to hear what this position is) every year?

Anyone who thinks for a second that (shy of a medical condition which would be completely beyond his control) that he may not be back for next season (and longer) hasn't been paying attention. Anyone who a year ago thought that he may not return for 2011-2012 had no clue as to who JC is or what he is about.

We need to stop whining about this. Pundits will continue to write articles about this (as if it is some proprietary info) because they have little creativity and realize that at some point in the not too distant future JC will retire (and they want to say that they published it first).

JC is not Bobby Bowden or Joe Paterno. He has mentioned publicly that his eventual retirement is inevitable (something that neither Bowden nor Paterno was ever willing to do), which I guess adds some fuel to this but one clear reality is that he has given more (far more) to the university and the men's hoops program than he could ever take. Anyone who is upset because they don't know the intimate details of JC's thought process is far too full of himself and anyone who thinks he is being selfish (and hurting the school and basketball program in the process) is (as stated above) clueless as to who JC is and what he is about.
