This is a good example of why these HS POY awards are basically meaningless. Arike Ogunbowale set a state scoring record in the semifinals on the way to a state title. Marina Mabrey led her team to the NJ Tournament of Champions title. So many of these top recruits have a story like that.
With respect to Patberg, I got the sense from following her run in the Indiana tournament by newspaper and twitter that her team was usually outclassed in overall talent. I don't think they had any other D1-type players. Bedford North Lawrence had 3 seniors who are D1 commits (one to Purdue, one MSU, one Butler), two of whom are in the ESPN top 100.
Ali Patberg couldn't possibly have done more for her HS team in the games where it mattered most. So it's cool to see her get recognition for that. But there are several players in several states that you could say that about.
