I just watched the replay and charted our offensive possessions following the under 4 minute TO plus both OTs.

Gilbert ISO crossover long 2 miss. Bouknight/Carlton somehow force Xavier to lose the ball out of bounds. Carlton gets ball, makes decent move, right hook off back rim. He gets a follow. Misses.

Gilbert gets rebound. Transition opportunity. 4 on 4. But Gilbert has a big on him. He takes him 1v1, misses layup, big either gets a block or changes shot.

Polley hits 3 off the pindown to give us 5 point lead with 1:30 left.

Vital ISO 3 with 6 seconds left on the shot clock with announcer saying "That cannot possibly be what Hurley drew up!"

Gilbert is fouled up 1 with 30 seconds left. He makes both. Clutch.

Gilbert dribbles the ball up court, crosses at 12 seconds, ISOs, attacks with 3 seconds left, beats his man, blocked by weakside defender.

Bouknight is fouled away from basket. Makes 2 FTs.

GIlbert tries ISO. Nothing. Vital tries ISO. Nothing. Vital drives, draws defender, and dishes to Carlton with 5 seconds on shot Carlton travels. Pass was a bit high, but Cartlon had his hands ready to catch and just kinda missed it then shuffled his feet when the Xavier guy rotated over. Carlton fouls out on next defensive possession.

Gilbert ISO 3 with less than 10 seconds on the shot clock. Short, not close.

Gilbert drives ISO with mismatch against 6'8" Carter. Gets by him with long steps, but then tries to use right hand on left side to lay it in. Shot blocked.

Gilbrt leads 4 on 3 break after miss. At 3pt line, passes to open Bouknight on the wring. Bouk drives and gets ugly move blocked.

Gilbert ends up with it after a weave. Runs pick and roll. Drives against backup Xavier big. Big goes straight up, Gilbert does a hanging fall away larup attempt, miss.

Brandon Adams and Bouknight double and force a turnover that Gilbert grabs. Is fouled. Makes both FTs.

30 seconds left, Gilbert drives going nowhere, dishes to Adams in corner. Airball. Rebound Bouknight, miss.

Gilbert drives with 20 seconds left, draws foul (misses layup). Makes both FTs. Honestly really soft foul call against Carter.

Polley almost turns it over on tight inbounds pass. Polley misses 3. Bouknight 3 point play including onions FT.

Bouknight gets ball on a curl. Tries to finish over 2 guys. Miss.

Gilbert offensive foul, hooking his defender on a drive somehow.

Polley bricks a 3.

Vital steal in the backcourt, gets fouled, and makes both.

Vital drives, kicks to Sidney Wilson who drives and takes a terrible floater facing 90 degrees away from basket, Vital oreb misses follow, Adams oreb to Polley for missed 3, Bouknight rebound and layup. Huge 4th attempt.

Vital drives and is blocked trying to use his right hand on left side of basket.

Gilbert ISOs for 5 seconds, goes nowhere then passes to Polley. Polley panics and throws it back to Gilbert. Gilbert bailed out because defender hit is elbow on a 3pt attempt. Makes all 3. Clutch FTs.

Bouknight gets the ball with 10 seconds left in shot clock, hangs and hits a tough banker to put us up 1.

Gilbert loses dribble. Vital gets it. Very obviously travels. They don't call t. Throws up a shot. MIss. Sid's rebound misses. Game over.

I'm seeing Gilbert and Vital combined 0 for 10 with a couple turnovers, and 5 of those shots blocked.

But also 10 made FTs in the 14 minutes I guess. FTs caused by a forced turnover from other guys trap, an intentional foul, a terrible jump shot foul by defense, a soft foul, and 1 good foul forced by Vital after his steal.

24 possessions (not including intentional foul on Gilbert)

3 made field goals. Again 5 shots blocked.

Refer to my post in the "can we get some game management" thread. Our guards need to recognize when it is a "big" possession. When we need a bucket we should have a go to guy with multiple go to plays. The plan of senior guards having carte blanche to do whatever they want kills us. It has to stop.

In other words we need to start defining roles. When we need a bucket it should not be pot luck. There should be a plan. The upperclassmen need to realize that they might not always be the best candidates to be the go to guy. They need to be ok with that. Winning needs to be the priority. Can Gilbert and Vital deal with that is then question? It just has not worked with those two guys being the hammer at the end of big games. We need a changing of the guard so to speak.

Gilbert's game is a lot like Boat's minus the athleticism. He doesn't have the hops to be a slasher and is jumper is too inconsistent to be a shooter. But you have respect his toughness.

I was shocked to see neither the nor CV can finish with the left hand at the rim; which made blocking their shots even easier.

I also thought Hurley wasted a timeout which came back to haunt him.

Yeah Vital and Bouk both missed or had shots blocked in key situations by trying to use their right hands to finish instead of using their lefts and using their bodies to shield (and much more likely to draw a foul when the guys attempt the block).

Carlton at least used his left, but missed a couple bunnies as per seemingly usual these days.

I see a lot of reliance on 3s that weren’t falling. Great if they fall. Need to work more plays getting into the paint. Not to sound like Joe Buck here but the key to winning is getting points - who cares if they come from behind the arc
Love the offensive rebounding - the effort was there.
The big takeaway is also to get the ball to the guy who is hitting shots. In this case it’s Bouk. If it was Polley, like against Florida, then get it to Polley. I get AG was good from the line so having him take shots and get fouled and get to the line is one strategy but you can’t just win at the line.

That, but Boatright worked himself into a 41% 3pt shooter by his senior year. Gilbert is decidely not that.

These days? How about for 2+ years? Bad hands, no hops, no clue on how to finish is not a winning combination for a big.

I wasn't clear. Gilbert is not in Boat's class. But he plays the same style minus the ability to pull it off. But he is quick and tough.
