My Goddaughter; whom I love dearly, went to UMD. She was always safe, got a fantastic education, and loved the school and the area. I get that we are all basketball fans and have views on teams & coaching - but UMD is a fine place to go for an education. Let's just stick to basketball - shall we?

We have The MOD Squad to set and monitor rules and content of exchange. Other than that, we can disagree, but that is it...posters can express their opine w/o qualification. That is in fact the beauty of it...

I want my daughter going to a school that is safe, most parents do too.

That site is interesting, and I had never seen it before, but it is also of questionable accuracy and does not appear to be undated regularly. The incidence of serious crime is always going to be higher the larger the city and the denser the population surrounding a campus. Uconn out in the middle of nowhere is certainly going to have a lower crime rate than St. Johns for example. But the other factor and one that obviously is not reported on that site is a vast majority of crimes perpetrated on college kids are by fellow students and the handling/reporting of those is problematic at best.

Chamique Holdsclaw shot a gun into her former girlfriend's car just blocks off the Georgia Tech campus.

The neighborhoods around the Tech campus are notorious for the high crime rate, but campus itself is by and large exceptionally safe. Obviously, there will still be stolen property, fist fights, property damage, etc. But violent crime, such as armed robbery, etc., is very rare directly on campus. It does happen, but usually by "outsiders" walking through campus looking for targets. Sexual assault is, unfortunately, far higher than it should be on college campuses and is often committed by a fellow student.

My husband once commented that the violent crime rates are often significantly higher just off college campuses. Especially the neighborhoods just off campus proper where many students live. And his observation makes sense in that most campuses do not allow students to posses guns in their dorm rooms or carry them on campus. So when you have students walking from their apartment to campus with laptops, iPhones, tablets, cash in their wallets, etc., thugs know they aren't armed so they are easy pickings for mugging and robbery - armed or otherwise.

Just wanted to weigh in on a theme that appears with some frequency in threads re where and why a kid might matriculate. Although I understand why UCONN can be described as in the middle of nowhere, that seems to sound less appealing than need be. Storrs is also a day trip from Boston and from New York, which are certainly magnet cities.

(My alma mater could be described as in the middle of nowhere as well, but that kept no very few students away. Though it was a day trip from Philly and New York, very few of us had the time for that as we were quite serious about our studies most of the time. Additionally, those of us on scholarship also did not have the money for day trips. But, again, very few who were accepted declined.)

UCONN has a lot to recommend it as a college setting, especially for someone who is serious about their education.

I consider that the change in tone in this thread to be in bad taste and loaded with bias and inaccuracies.

A site is linked in one post that sensationally purports to be able to provide detailed information about frequency of crimes in any locale and we are given data of one, College Park, Maryland.

These data may deter Ms Boykin from going to Maryland, maybe not. I have to wonder what a similar map of Storrs, South Bend, State College, or Durham would look like. Relying solely on my memory, didn't UConn have a popular football player stabbed on campus? And didn't Notre Dame get some terrible publicity about one student killed at football practice and another involved in a most unseemly sexual assault/suicide/coverup incident? We know more than we want to about Penn State's situation.

Focus on any campus or college community and you will find justification for negatives, and surely there are some coaches and many boosters who would seize on it to turn a recruit away from the cited institution.

My view is that responsible parents do some form of "school safety evaluation" before sending their son and daughter somewhere for four years. I wish we could just leave it at that.
