To be clear, this is not a post bashing the team or any player. Instead it's just my opinion and observation of what's been going on lately.
Honestly, this team desperately needs Calhoun to return. He is the one person who is ready, willing, and able to hold each one of the guys accountable for their effort, play, and actions. This team desperately needs the fire, passion, and intense emotion Calhoun brings to his coaching and the game back in full force.
I strongly believe the majority of our "Blaney" games turn out differently with Calhoun on the sideline. While I appreciate all that Blaney has done for the team and program over the years, he is not Calhoun. He can't motivate these guys to go to battle with a fire in their own hearts and get them to stay focused and play to the best of their ability.
I miss seeing Calhoun stomping feverishly out on to the court after a bad call, bad play, or poor decision. I miss seeing him get in someone's face when they stray from the plan. I miss seeing HIM get T'd up and kicked out of a game. Instead, the past nine games or so, we've gotten arms crossed with blank stares.
While the players certainly have a major role in how they perform - a huge portion of that is driven by how they are coached. And they have to be held accountable. Every single one.
There has been so many random things going on this season (APR, coaching suspensions, eligibility issues, health issues, etc.) it really doesn't surprise me at all we haven't figured out the best recipe for success yet.
However, with the likely return of Calhoun this weekend and hopefully no further speed bumps along the way, I strongly believe this team will respond to the challenge ahead. I will be right there rooting for them every step of the way - regardless of the outcome.
Will you?
