Abraham is in the portal

I suppose it's possible, but even if you think Ross is ahead of Furphy which is looking increasingly unlikely by the day I just don't see it. It's going to an 8 man rotation and he's miles behind Smith, Stewart, Reibe
What is this based on? Ross had 8 points in the first scrimmage and 9 points in the second.

Both times out scoring Furphy. Hes been neck and neck scoring wise with Stewart in the scrimmages.

This bagging on Ross this board has been doing has been very unfair.

The "bagging" on Ross (assuming I understand what you're saying) is because he was a major liability when on the court last year. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't see folks knocking him as a human being, just as a basketball player. If he's gotten so much better over the offseason that he now helps us on the court, I, and most here, will be rooting for him.

But as much more as Hurley knows than me and everyone else on the board, the minutes he got last season were inexplicable, unless Hurley believes in his future and thought that number of of minutes was necessary to keep him in the program.

6'7, young, and athletic is a good base for anyone to build on. I was excited for Abraham, but I understand why he left since he'd be competing with multiple guys just to get on the floor here. Hope he gets big minutes and does well over at GTown (while going 0-2 against UConn, of course)

With the first 8 pretty much set, Ross doesn’t really bring a unique skillset to the floor to justify being an oft played/needed 9th man. I really don’t even know what he does really well. Maybe something blossoms this year. At minimum Furphy brings something to the rotation that would be unique, as a big ball handling lead type guard.

Hurley thought it was important to keep him here. We have a huge need for a big athletic wing defender in the Stephon Castle/Andre Jackson role that, physically, he is the best fit for.

And by the numbers he seems to be performing well when reporters go by practice.

Looking forward to see how the game slows down for him to take advantage of his physical tools with his first year of playing time under his belt and as a junior older than or the same age as a lot of the guys he will be going against. Those kind of things should help him mentally.

Based on what has been coming out from the staff about Furphy since he got on campus

You're right that we need a lockdown wing defender, but Ross is the worst candidate for that. His defense was AWFUL last year and is why I have no interest in seeing him on the court unless something has drastically changed

Smith is the backup PG.

Solo, Braylon, and Demary will probably all spend time at the 2.

Braylon, Demary, Solo, Stew, and Ross can all play the 3.

I just don’t get the hype for where Furphy fits on this years roster to carve out playing time that this board pushes while simultaneously making it seem impossible for Ross to have an impact.

I’m not spending too much time going back and forth. Just put me firmly in the camp that Furphy will see playing time more like freshman year Nowell, Stew, maybe even Ross and Abraham more than he will see playing time like a Solo, Andre, Clingan, etc.

Not sure if Ross will start this year (I’m not ruling it out), but he’ll be in the rotation heavy off the bench at minimum for that 2-3 wing spot is my prediction alongside Stew.

I don’t disagree that he’s behind Smith, Stewart, and Reibe, but I hesitate to agree that it’s going to be an 8 man rotation. It’s also possible that if Furphy is as ready to go as some of the hype indicates, he ends up not competing directly with Ross but also with Smith and/or serves as a sub for Solo. I think Ross needs just enough this year to tee himself up to be a starter/leader as a senior, and I reckon that Hurley is thinking about his role as a senior too. Obviously, reality has to play out in order for any of these thoughts to be meaningful.

lol - you beat me to it. Now he’s downplaying Furphy to justify Ross. As if we didn’t have a whole season of watching Ross, and didn’t just watch Furphy lead Oz this summer. I’m calling this a man crush.

It would be a big change if Hurley isn't cutting the rotation to 8 by Big East play like he's done every year. And it's not even really a case of Furphy or Ross not being good enough or deserving minutes, it's that there's already a minutes crunch for the top 8 without throwing a 9th guy into the mix

Furphy outplayed most of next years first round nba picks in FIBA tournament. I think that tells you all you need to know. It will take some time for him to get acclimated but he is going to play plenty this season.

Ross isn’t starting this year barring injury. Most of the rest of your posts are normal dude-crushes on players type stuff but that’s crazy talk.

Maybe I’m misremembering, but in my mind there was a reliable 9-man rotation through the whole Big East season in 2022-2023. It was only in the postseason that Hass didn’t see much time.

You're probably right. Minutes per game for each player:

Hawkins - 29.4
Jackson -29.1
Karaban - 28.9
Newton - 28.7
Sanogo - 26.6
Alleyne - 17.9
Calcaterra - 14.5
Clingan - 13.0
Diarra - 12.8

Joey C didn’t play much during big east play I believe. Diarra minutes were cut during the tourney.
Big East Tournament or Big East regular season?

Kind of up and down but he was pretty consistently in the rotation. Especially the last 11 games of the season (including BET and NCAA Tournament). There were 5 games he played less than 9 minutes during the Big East regular season. Check out his minutes in each game.

9 guys played throughout the season, but in any given game it was still only 8. Hass played early in Big East play as Joey Calcaterra's minutes got cut. Then the last few games of the season Diarra had a few DNPs and mostly under 5 minutes

I do recall feeling like certain games were either Joey games or Hass games so that makes sense.

me as well.....and didn't even try to disguise himself. Another whole season of this, sigh. Now the question is, is it a 2 for 1 now that there are 2 Ross's on the squad???

I think, if this was 20 or so years ago, Abraham could have become a UConn favorite. He does a lot of things very well but maybe not one thing exceptionally great. Maybe a bench guy for multiple years, working his way to being a starter, picking up a championship along the way. But, things change and he envisions a different path.

No room for intelligent takes on the topic in this thread buddy, we’re on to Ross v Furphy now

Just to piggyback sort of on your post, I do think that as a general practice this season, Hurley will be making more of an effort to decrease the minutes his primary five or six players are playing. By the game a few minutes less, each player across the board, spread out over the season, will help keep players fresher and injury free for when he really needs them in the tight spots of which there will be many. Hurley has the horses for this this season, ( Karoma, Ross, Furphy, Reibe, Smith). Other benefits would be a more aggressive defensive posture, and more buy in from non-starting players which can only add to team chemistry.

Two for one, now that made me laugh. Is it weird to say I almost missed it? I love that he abbreviated his handle - maybe it’s a sign that he’ll abbreviate his Ross love?
