It has been 224 days since the hot summer weather in Storrs turned cool & breezy, then finally fell into a cold, icy and endless winter that even today hasn't got the message that Spring has sprung. It has also been 224 days since Tierney Lawlor, the shy girl from Ansonia, and Briana Pulido, the track athelete from Miami, decided to answer Stewie's call for walk-ons to try out for the UConn Women's basketball team. They came out, they made it and they stayed. Through 224 days of brutal practices, body aching workouts, endless travel and the fun part, games.
TLAW and Polly not only made the UConn squad, they became full fledged team mates and crowd favorites. TLAW electrified fans late in games by coming in stone cold off the bench and nailing 3 pointers from all over the arc. While UConn doesn't keep "Freshman Walk-on 3 pt Records", it is a bet that Tierney's 8 three's and 42.1% accuracy would rank at the top.
When TLAW and Polly tried out, no promises of playing time were made. Geno doesn't even promise that to super star recruits. So far this season, TLAW has played 111 minutes and Pulido 60 minutes. Sixty minutes is only an hour, and 111 minutes is less than 2 hours. Two hours isn't even the length of one typical UConn practice, and there have been over 100 of them. But TLAW and Polly still display the enthusiasm and team spirit they had day one!! At today's game, watch when there is a timeout and UConn's players jog to the bench. See who runs to greet the team and yell encouragement.
Congratulations to TLAW and Polly for having the courage to walk-on to the best basketball program in the country, for having the fortitude to survive the practices, workouts & travel and for showing the grace to never give the impression it was anything but fun and you were anything but grateful. You're both special and we appreciate you.
Go Huskies..!!
