20 questions across various sports. A throwback to when quizzes were as common as music threads.
Coaches and Schools – WBB
  • Not where Pat Summitt coached, but the school she graduated from
  • Led USC to their National Championships
  • Sonja Hogg, won National Championships at La Tech but finished her coaching career here
  • The 4 coaches to lead 4 different Texas schools to an NCAA title
  • The school’s rich coaching history includes Sue Gunter, Gary Blair, Royce Chadwick, Lee Ann Riley, Brandon Schneider and Joe Curl – all had winning records there
Coaches and Schools – Softball
  • Their field is named after former coach Dr. JoAnne Graf
  • They play at Sharon J. Drysdale field, honoring a long time coach
  • Former coaches Sharon Backus and Sue Enquist won a national championship there as co-head coaches in 1989
  • School hosts the Judi Garmon Classic annually; Garmon was a long time head coach
  • Nice things were said about this school’s former coach Connie Clark during this year’s NCAA’s.
Coaches and Schools – Football
  • One of the most influential football coaches of all time, he graduated from Cornell, coached Jim Thorpe at Carlisle in a 45 year career at various schools
  • His contemporary, Amos Alonzo Stagg, is mostly associated with this former Big 10 school, nicknamed the Maroons, where he spent 40 years
  • Son Terry at Auburn and son Tommy at Tulane had undefeated seasons, but so did dad at this ACC school.
  • A recent reduction in winning percentage requirements will make this innovative coach eligible for the NCAA Football Hall of Fame, with a 59.6 winning percentage.
  • Brian Kelly and Chip Kelly can be confusing – this one was recently named Offensive Coordinator of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Coaches in the Pros – various sports
  • First head coach of the NY Liberty, leading them for 2 seasons, she had previously coached Ohio State to a National Runner-Up finish.
  • He led the Knicks to NBA championships in 1970 and 1973 and is in the Hall of Fame. Don’t confuse him with the Celtic’s Auerbach.
  • Known as the “Fordham Flash”, he was a Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
  • These 2 coaches each won 2 Super Bowls with the New York Football Giants
  • Emile Francis was their head coach when I first followed the sport.

Yes on SF Austin. The odd factoid that so many coaches, including Mark Kellogg now at West Virginia, had success there has long stuck in my mind. Most are better known for coaching other places, with varied success. I actually had to look up the list for specifics and had actually forgotten Blair.

And one set of hints - The USC coach and Texas Tech coach share a last name, but are not related so far as I know. And Hogg finished her career at one of the 4 named Texas schools where she remained for a while as an administrator and was periodically shown in the stands on TV broadcasts.

Knicks - red holtzman
Emile - whalers?
Acc school. - Florida state
Chip kelly

Time for answers, I'll skip the softball questions since they didn't generate any responses.

Women's Basketball -
  • @Bigboote and @VAUConnFan both know that Pat Summitt went to UT Martin.
  • The head coach for USC's back to back national championship teams was Linda K. Sharp. Teams featured Cheryl Miller, the McGee twins and Cynthia Cooper.
  • Former La Tech coach Hogg finished her head coaching career at Baylor. She immediately preceded Kim Mulkey, who played for her at La Tech.
  • Big and VAU know all Texas national championship coaches except Texas Tech. That would be Marsha Sharp.
  • And as I noted above - a big congrats for Big for knowing about Stephen F Austin.

Football
  • VAU knows Pop Warner coached Jim Thorpe, but no one offered that Amos Alonzo Stagg coached at the University of Chicago
  • VAU and @slepers knows that Bobby Bowdon coached at Florida State, where he had an undefeated season, as his sons did elsewhere.
  • The change in required winning percentage for the College Football Hall of Fame was done really for the late Mike Leach, who just missed under the old requirements. One other coach also may benefit.
  • Slepers also knows that Chip Kelly is the now OC for the Raiders.

The Pros -
  • First Liberty coach was named Nancy Darsch. She was National Runner-Up at Ohio State when Katie Smith was there.
  • VAU and slepers remember Red Holtzman
  • @DriveLH remembers Frankie Frisch. Those Cardinals were a team of players with great nicknames. Visited their museum last year.
  • VAU has Parcells, but forgets Tom Coughlin.
and finally - Drive and VAU know that Emile Francis was the Head Coach of the NY Rangers in the day.

Kim Mulkey coached Baylor to 3 NC, 2005, 2012, 2019. Some called her the 7 year itch coach when it came to NC. She messed it up by winning her fourth NC in 2023.
