2nd & 11 from their own 45 with 1:00 remaining in the 1st Quarter

Newsome just gained 4 yards on 1st and 15 after a false start on Knappe on 1st down.

#1 – UCONN starts out in a 4 wide single back … UCF shows cover 2, but slowly walks down a safety …

#2 – Beals goes in motion, nobody gives chase revealing zone, WLB creeps in … safety moves to the middle for Cover 1 or Cover 3

#3 – At the snap Shirreffs rolls right with Newsome similar to that option vs BYU … the SLB passes Bloom off to the deep SS while he focuses on Beals … the WLB blitzes from the back side

#4 – Mayala and Thomas run 3 yard hitches … the O-line picks up the rush very well … the moving pocket is giving Shirreffs a chance to read 1 defender … LCB #25 … Bloom presses the deep safety

#4 Shirreffs reads the CB.jpg

#5 – The LCB #25 commits to the Mayala hitch route … Bloom squares out into the void in the zone … Shirreffs delivers over the LCB

#6 – Bloom gets up to make a great catch on what is essentially a timing route …

Conclusion – I like this play for a lot of reasons. UCONN has struggled to handle the unpredictable blitz packages of Missouri and BYU … and it looks like they’ve added a wrinkle to hopefully slow that down. Also … the Beals motion confirms zone coverage and occupies the SLB. The beauty of the play design is I believe if the LCB drifts back into Bloom’s path then Shirreffs will take Mayala’s hitch and set-up for 3rd and 4.

And it absolutely looks like the playbook turns another page each week! Not only to reveal another look … but also to take advantage of some film study of the opponent.

#7 – Check out how the read takes Shirreffs’s eyes from the LCB, back to the deep safety, then back to the spot where Bloom will be.
