Joe is as bad as the NCAA. He revises or ignores facts to fit his pre-conceived opinions, but while I usually agree with him in principal, he has no principals.

the real problem is that the Presidents want the NCAA to enforce the rules on the other guys but not them, They approve all these complex rules that they don't even understnd and they don't think through the implications and then they send an enforcement team out there with zero oversight or guidance. And every time someone does something they didn't originally cover, they make another rule about it. the fact is that the NCAA or something like it, is absolutely crucial if you want everyone to play by the same rules. I guess you could do like professional sports and have a commissioner who is more or less all powerful. But there needs to be some body or person that establishes the rules that all the schools play by. other wise its a free for all. when there were no scholarship limits for example, Pitt decided to award 115 one year. Nobody else did. But the next year a few more schools did it. then the NCAA made the 85 rule. How do you run a national basketball championship if the Big 10 decides to award 20 scholarships, the ACC 15 and the SEC 23? Or maybe the AAC decides to play by international rules and the PAC decides to use NBA ones while the ACC uses the current college rules. (Remember the Big East experimented with 6 fouls at one point) those are just examples of what might happen. Who knows what else. So you need someone or something to establish standards. Rules of the game, rules for eligibility, and you need someone or something to enforce them.

There is one way to clean this up. Eligibility is based on successful progress toward graduation. Meaning no freshman can play first semester.

Any school caught fixing grades (hi UNC) is banned from postseason competition until that student would have graduated if he had to retake the credits or four years.

Any coach caught paying players is banned. Any school not following compliance protocol is banned from the postseason for one year for each major offense compounded. So, Miami is done for 3 years as a three time loser.

Bans include forfeiture of postseason dispersements and a TV ban.

I don't see a real need for many more rules.

I've stopped caring if a kid ever goes to class. I'm under no delusion of them being "student-athletes", they're not. They are there to perform for the university on the field, not in the class room. I view scholarship athletes as being like soccer prodigies in Europe. Those kids attend academies run by the pro team in town. Same thing with U.S. scholarship athletes. If the kid steals an education while he/she is attending school, good for the kid it will help them when the pro dream fizzles out but it's up to the kid. It's up to the university to set the academic standard for their athletes, not the NCAA.
