Saw that today. These stat cherry picks are so dumb lol
Well yeah it’s a selection of stats but these are like the most basic stats everyone follows. It’s not like they picked some obscure stats. Points, rebounds, assists, and blocks. And 3pt %. I think it’s meaningful - he’s a productive all-around player and good shooter.

Disagree solely for two stats 3PT% and Blocks.

They highlight his unique ability.

Here is the list of players in the top 150 in 3PT attempts with over 1 BPG:

Alex Karaban 1.9 BPG, 6.4 3PA, 41.3 3PT% - UConn

David Joplin 1.2 BPG, 7.1 3PA, 31.1 3PT% - MU
Austin Rapp 1.3 BPG, 7.0 3PA, 36.1 3PT% - Portland
AJ Clayton 1.8 BPG, 6.7 3PA, 38.8 3PT% - Ohio
Conner Withers 1.5 BPG, 6.4 3PA, 36.4 3PT% - Bryant

Look at the percentage differences. Karaban has the most blocks and the highest percentage from three. He is the best of a rare group of players who can block shots and hoist from three.

Alex is an underrated defender for sure. He sometimes gets bullied by strong players but his good reach and timing helps him block a lot of shots.

I would agree with you most of the time with this... The baseball ones are ridiculous. Only one player has some random mix of "w, x, y, z..." that player? Mike Pagliarulo. Get him in the HOF.

But with this... 15-5-3 assists and 40% from 3 is pretty damn solid on its own. Add in the blocks and it illustrates an extremely well-rounded player that every other team would kill to have. Here? We ridicule him because he's not "better." We haven't had many players here who had that mix. Rip? Nope. Tristen, Cam? Nope.

What other UConn players have had this stat line for a season? Are there any? I looked up a few (Ray, Caron, Rudy, Boone) and none did.

On Twitter yesterday someone had him as first team all Big East, and a bunch of UConn fans chimed in to say he shouldn't be.
It's true he hasn't magically morphed into Caron Butler, but he's still pretty good. We are not always the best at appreciating what we have.

Rudy would be the closest - could block shots and shoot threes. He peaked at 2.1 assists, but MW was so ball dominant that maybe in a system with more moving of the ball and shared responsibility, he’d have had more. Rudy also struggled from 3 as a sophomore though.

Different skill set (not nearly the shot blocker or shooter - better passer, ball handler and rebounder) but Daniel Hamilton was always a guy who had a unique well-rounded game as a forward (13-9-5) who I wished stayed another year to maybe take a leap as a scorer. He’s largely forgotten, but haven’t seen too many like him. Liam was scratching that surface before the injury as he was becoming a better passer. Going way back … but year two Henefeld might have been something special (just swapping out steals for blocks).

Karaban has a unique career arc as a two time champion. Once he’s gone and the frustration of this season subsides (hopefully with a nice run in March) - he’ll be certainly appreciated. There were some frustrations in real time with guys like Freeman and Boone not taking a leap with more responsibility after titles. Boat to some degree too. But they’re all remembered more for their impacts on the titles and less what came after.

Yeah, these are core stats, not obscure ones. Not like it's "Karaban is the only player to average 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 40% 3pt % on games held on Tuesdays following a federal holiday when the ambient temperature outside is <32 degrees against teams whose shortest walk-on player is under 5'11".

If you want totally, meaningless, irrelevant stats listen to Gary Cohen on Mets broadcasts. He is the KIng of meaningless stats.

I also think that he believes that he gets extra pay for each word he speaks since he never keeps quiet.

DHam and Jalen Adams are largely forgotten players on underachieving and mediocre KO teams. But both were superbly talented. The team in 15/16 should've been so much better with DHam, Gibbs, Purvis, Amida, Jalen, Shon Miller, Facey, Omar, and Enoch. Basically all were either well-regarded recruits (minus Amida) or top transfers and the product was just so meh. Jalen Adams on this team, with this coaching staff, would be an All-American.

Not to totally derail the thread, but Gary Cohen is the best play-by-play guy in baseball, bar none.

I also love the idea of Pags sitting at home in Florida and the Google alert for his name goes off and he wonders how he came up on a UConn basketball board.

Posting that info was as much for AK as anybody else. Part of the mental tune-up after some rough games where the “go to guy” didn’t finish. He’s solid, not the prime hunter killer, and that’s just fine.

Alex improved defensively throughout the 23-24 season. Maybe not a lockdown like Steph or Jackson, Jr, but he went from a liability frosh year, to a solid defensive contributor by end of last year. Don't know what his def stats are, but looks pretty solid to me this year.

Agree with Gurleyman- "Once he’s gone and the frustration of this season subsides (hopefully with a nice run in March) - he’ll be certainly appreciated."...and would amplify that his effectiveness and impact will grow as Liam settles back in.

I'm here for that! If you're out there Pags, loved those mid 80s teams!
