I think it is important for people to use their accomplishment platforms as a means to inspire others. I believe that was the message that A'ja was giving. Accomplishments need to be praised, valued and held up as an example for others, especially when done under less than favorable conditions. I remember Wilma Rudolf's story of her overcoming her childhood injury to become the track star she became. However, credit needs to stay in context to what they have accomplished and not bleed into area's that have little to do with what created that platform.
When we give out undeserved credit, it comes at the expense of someone who does deserve it. Charles Barkley once said that athletes should not be young peoples role models. If we strive to value each person for their accomplishments then we should be consistent. That principle is foundational to equal opportunity. And equal opportunity is foundational to equality. Each person should be judged on their own merits. Bias and bigotry take many forms.
