76 Team NCAA Tournament Coming

D1 Docket called it two years ago:

How does that make sense? Wouldn’t it be 4 and 4 and 4? The 4 16 seed games and then the 4 12 seed games and then the 4 11 seed games (or whatever 2 seed lines the last 8 at large teams are on)

They’re turning 12 games across 3 seed lines into play ins by adding 12 teams (64+12=76)

I guess they could do 3 games a day for 4 days but then all the 16 seeds (and 12 seeds and 11 seeds) wouldn’t be playing on the same day as it says

As long as they’re play in games and not “tournament” games I don’t see the problem. If anything it gives all those teams on the outside looking in a final chance to prove they belong.

And it’s more money for the sport.

3 games in Albuquerque Tuesday, 3 games in Dayton Tuesday. And then 3 more each on Wednesday

How to destroy college basketball:

1. Create de facto free agency so that team's rosters change annually. Check!

2. Abandon, the student athlete model for a paid professional model. Check!

3. Water down the NCAA tournamen by adding more teams. Check!

They shouldn't mess with the tournament which is one of the great sporting events of the year (IMHO the best) but they are always going to because the big conferences NEED to get their 17-12 teams into the tournament to make more money and exclude even more mid major teams.

I’d say make the last 16 at large in play in the play-in games. Don’t screw over the small schools for whom the NCAA tournament is a dream by making them play this round. After all they earned their way in. The others were charity cases.

They are bound and determined to ruin this event by expanding it too much. And by bringing in pseudo-good teams. They need to bring more Big 10 teams so they can lose in the early rounds. I would argue they have already done that. Should have taken away an atlarge bid every time they added an earned one. It should be harder, not easier for mediocre teams to get into the tournament.

Since we are going this way, they really should just eliminate the games and let us watch the computer roll out its algorithms to award a championship to a. Big 10 team.

The NCAA is so badly run and stupid. What is their thinking? Like many have said, the original 64 team, survive and advance format is one of the greatest sporting events in the world... ever.
Did they hire a consulting firm and are they the same guys who came up with the joke of the NBA Cup?

If they expand for greed's sake, I just want a rule where any automatic bid winner (tournament or the Ivy League's season) be automatically in the field of 64. Part of the 'magic' is seeing those kids you never hear about getting their chance on the opening weekend. We know this is most likely a pressure move as we move toward 4 power mega conferences and the fact that some teams would end up out because they cannibalize each other in conference play and of course more games means more advertising and more money.

I don't watch the play in games as it is to be honest. I won't watch these games either. And I can't wait for one of these OAD big NIL frosh or sophs refuse to play in the play-in game to protect from injury like we're starting to see in some of the smaller bowl games.

The Office No GIF

I realize I am yelling at the wind at this point. 68 teams is just fine, no more please.
I think you have all 16 seeds play to oaky the 1. Then, everything else is bubble teams playing in.

As long as the tournament doesn't increase to 128.

Adding in a seventh game would introduce so many more upsets and combinations, it would be impossible to reasonably expect your team to get through the gauntlet. 6 is hard enough if you aren't a top seed.

NBA Cup is great.

I don't get why people don't like he NBA Cup. Players play hard in it, and it makes the worst part of the nba schedule, the Day after opening night to Xmas, somewhat interesting. I watch the games. Whenever you can get a professional to play hard in a game, and not in a long term marathon mode, it's good hoops.

We discovered Halliburton in the NBA Cup and also Anthony Edwards. The tourney works.

The first 2 winners were 1st round losers in the finals. It may be great to get exposure for lesser known players, and some guys may play hard but the paid tier stars don't really care. It's about June for them and most fans don't really care. 1.33 million viewers is considered not much of an audience for a televised major sport event. It's a gimmick and cash grab. Everyone sees through it.

I'm really glad you enjoy. I really am. But I don't a single person who can name the winner for the first two.

I agree with you on the magic and I can’t wait for a high draft pick to decide to sit out the tourney to protect his draft spot.
