USA basketball in Rio.jpg

USA Women's Basketball keeps on crushing opponents at the Olympics and now stands 6-0. Some of the stats are as weird as the shot block attempt by #4 for Japan above. Hint, you might want to jump...
Consider:

1. Brittney Griner and Lindsay Whalen have taken the same number of 3 point shots, ONE. Both missed.
2. The only USA player with single digit total rebounds (9) is Diana Taurasi.
3. Opponents have made more three point shots (48) than the USA (45), (but have shot 22 more).
4. USA has 180 assists in six games for exactly 30 per game. Sue and Maya lead with 30 and 25 respectively.
5. D.T. has made 25 three point shots (61%). The rest of the team has 20 (35%).
6. Stewie has played the 2nd fewest minutes (73), but leads the team in made free throws (16), points per minute played (.739) and field goal % inside the 3 pt arc (80%).
7. Japan had the best 1st half of any team vs USA (46 pts) and then had the worst 2nd half (18).

Next game will be USA vs France on Thursday at 6pm. Winner plays either Serbia or Spain.

Go USA..!! :)

I like the choice of the number 7, David. It and 23 are my favorite numbers. ;)

Nicely done, as always. Just a few comments:

1. Both of them are good shooters, but that's clearly not BG's forte.

2. Dee really needs to up the intensity. Has she done anything in Rio?? ;)

3. As with UConn, the pressing defense leaves us a little vulnerable to ball reversal and transition threes. Credit the other teams. The 3-point shot is BIG in international play.

4. The hallmark of a Geno Auriemma team. We have the 3 best PGs in the world and three other former UConn players (plus others) who are outstanding and willing passers. Maya is now an assist machine, and Tina is not too shabby for a post player.

5. See #2. For yesterday's game, Diana gets the generosity award. She covered the minutes for her injured long-time teammate, and she gave Maya her 3-point shot back. :D

6. Stewie is the youngster, but she has shown periods of being unguardable. She definitely belongs on the team. She had 1 block every 2-3 minutes yesterday.

7. Strange stat. Japan plays Paul Ball very well and can shoot. But we matched their uptempo play and wore them down. I would have loved to see Moriah chasing their guards around. She NEVER wears out. This reminded me of the Dayton game a couple of years ago. Some teams can hang with UConn or the USA for a while, maybe even 20+ minutes, but few, if any, can do it for 40.
