I have disparaged golf on here but I actually play all the time.

One of my buddies owns 3 clubs so my whole group (6 of us) have decided to play all the local public courses on Friday over the next couple months. Same 3 clubs at each course.

What are you bringing?

I was thinking 5 wood, 7 iron, putter.

Agree with the 5 wood and 7 iron.
Should be able to putt somewhat decent with the 5 &7 so I would include a wedge over a putter. That will be handy for your approach shots and anywhere else around the green.

I'd go with:

1) A hybrid - Can tee off with it. Can use it for any shot 170-210 in the fairway and rough. And can putt with it.
2) 7 iron - Approach shots and par 3's.
3) Pitching wedge - 100 yds and in, can be serviceable out of the sand and helps around the green.

With those three clubs I am good from 150 in. All I have to do is get the ball out there off the tee and stay out of trouble/traps.

.-.
With only 3 total clubs:

1. Putter
2. Pitching Wedge
3. 5 iron (personally favorite long iron).

I mean a driver on 18 holes is used about 9-10 times so might as well go with your best long iron you are comfortable with. Then anything within 100 is your wedge and you do not want to putt with anything other than a putter.

IMO, putter is a waste in these games. No need to make putts, just need to avoid or minimize 3-putts. Even a 10 handicapper is 3 putting a couple of times a round.

@Deepster has it right. He has an iconic slection of clubs. Give yourself as many options as possible to get on the green from 150 yards and in.

Just had a thought pop in my head.

Have a draft between the players. As soon as one player picks a club, no one else can carry that club.
So, if the first player picks 7-iron, no one else can carry a 7-iron.

I'm not against this, but if I have a 14 yard putt, what am I using?

Also subjectively my 5-iron is my go to for left to right or right to left shot shaping from 85-yd choked up to about 225 full blast.

I like the way you think. My putting sucks and I cheat half the time on the green anyways, so this is perfect.

14 yard putt is 42'. Even PGA Tour players are low single digits for making a putt at that distance. Use wedge as a belly putter. Get within 4'-5' and make the lag putt.

Truthfully from 42' a 10 handicapper will 3 putt from that distance way more than they'll one putt from there.

Three Wood
Seven Iron
Putter

Came here to post the same thing when I read your thread title.

3 wood
7 iron
60 degree wedge

5 iron, 7 iron, putter.

It’s really about what clubs you feel best with. If you only have 3 clubs, use the ones you hit high and straight, then add a putter.

I chose a 5 iron because I tend to hit clubs with more loft much more consistently. I think my 5 might end up averaging out better overall than a 3 or 4 when all is said and done. I could also use it for my second shot on longer holes and give it a full swing.

But are there more than 14 clubs available?

Yes. There are probably 20-25 clubs a majority of players would choose from.

Want to get in to the weeds, you can probably get to 50 unique clubs.

Driver

2 wood through 9-wood (Tommy Fleetwood is carrying a 9-wood in his bag this week).

Hybrid clubs go from 2-hybrid up to 7 or 8 hybrid.

1-iron through 9-iron.

And about a dozen wedges with different loft numbers. Some go by function- Approach/Attack wedge, pitching Wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge. Some go by loft- 48 degree, 54 degree. Up to 60 degree. There are some gimmicky clubs that go up to 70 degrees or so.

Then there are some chipping irons

Finally, the putter.
