More fans at the game is a good thing, but I think it sets a bad precedent in terms of trying to sell a) future season tickets and b) single game tickets this season, given that people know if they wait until the last minute they can grab them for cheap.

Right now single game tickets for Syracuse are $45. Given the way the AD is aggressively pushing attendance, what incentive does the average fan have in buying the ticket for that price when come game week there are going to be way better deals?

UConn can get away with giving some away because the stadium is so small. Having 30-35k in the stadium consistently is going to create its own level of demand no matter how people come upon their tickets.

Nothing wrong giving away tickets. It will enable some fans to have their first Uconn football game experience. Hopefully, these fans will come back for future games.

Games against bigger opponents will naturally create their own demand.

What I don't think anyone has said is that if you give tickets away for free, sure, you sacrifice the up front payment, but those people often buy beer, food, etc. If the tickets aren't going to be sold, give them away, get people in the door, and sell them concessions.

Like I said, the trend is positive. But I agree with whaler that giving away a ton of tickets with the hope of getting to 70% capacity isn't something to cheer. There's a dark cloud, but also a silver lining.

I'll let it go because many people can't seem to wrap their heads around the psychology of how and why people spend money.

When you charge 10k non-students to attend a game and then give 10k tickets away afterwards - people stop buying up front and instead wait for the free ride.

I'm pretty sure UConn makes nothing on concessions or parking outside of the t-shirt stands.

By the logic in this thread UConn should stop selling tickets altogether and just open the gates for the first 38,500 who show up.

Thank you. I have season tickets and resent the Univ dropping tickets from the sky. It insults folks who pay. Why bothef getting season tickets when every game there are ads and emails for $10.00 tix? Why pay a seat license for chair backs or between the 20-40?

And as the season ticket sales slide - they ignore this obvious reason.

When you look at how many non-student/program season tickets they sell the numbers are pathetic.

They went from about 22-23k in 2005 and a decade later - they are below 10k. They have managed to chase off more than half their real season ticket base and continuing to alienate them is being cheered on. You almost can't make it up.

I don't purport to know why people spend their money how they do. I don't have the business acumen. But I do get the idea that we don't want to fill the stadium with ticket welfare collectors.

So, to be clear, I'm only advocating unloading some of them for free after exhausting all avenues to sell them. I'm ok with selling as many as possible and then on game day releasing a max of like 5K for free or at far reduced price. Not one of the first 5K? Too bad. That's all there are. You'll have to buy one if you still want in. Want to guarantee a ticket? Buy one. This would allow the school to make a little extra on items sold at the game. Now if you're correct and UConn doesn't profit on those items, then this is all a moot point.

I don't care for doing it through PC Richard or, like The Travelers does, to anyone who test drives a Ford, but I think giving away a few thousand to desperately put a few more bodies in the place isn't going to create the culture of hand outs you're worried about.

I've never been afraid to criticize UConn when I think they're wrong. For instance, when all the homers are ridiculing Whaler, I'm oftentimes one of the few siding with him.
