The three-peat talk was media and program hype.

Our sophomore class at the current time is not capable of producing enough to win at the highest level. Mahaney wasn’t going to help that.
You have one of the first coaches to win back to back titles with very different rosters and in dominant fashion. He then went on a media parade demonstrating his methodology. The narrative built up that what he was doing was different and unique and that the staff is a collection of strategic geniuses and alchemists.

Maybe just maybe this staff happened to land an exceptional assortment of players including a carryover core of a 7’2” unicorn rim protector and a 6’5” do everything PG.

This staff is amazing, but success will always start with having the right players. Evaluation is hard, especially when you’re banking on development and who does/doesn’t have high upside. You win some you lose some and it seems some of that good luck on player selection has evened out a bit. Now the question is how much will he be willing to course correct in the portal.

I’ve liked Burries for 2 years now, interested to see where he goes. We watched him a bit as a sophomore but he’s a bucket.

Pretty interesting that the SEC, given its aggregate performance the last couple of years and bundles of money, only has 3 players on the rosters.

IMO our portal needs are going to be a big scoring wing and the PG you have there. I don't think Stewart will be the starting 4 next season if Hurley can help it.

And IMO Mullin is the 2. Ball and Mullins both in the back court would be small unless we could find a big PG like Newton.
I agree with this. Our biggest portal need will need to be a 4 to replace Alex

They prefer to buy experienced players from the portal.

Way too soon to have a good sense on next year's roster. No idea who will be back. No clear sense of whether the freshmen have or will put on a few pounds of muscle.

SG Mullins looks like a starting SG, but if Ball is back he won't be.
PG Nowell/Transfer
PF Stewart/Abraham/Transfer/Reibe
SF Transfer/Ross/Furphy. If Mullins bulked up, maybe.
C Reed/Reibe

I know is sounds weird, but Furphy seems like the mostly physically ready of our freshmen wings to play in the Big East. Mullins is light. Adams is even lighter. 247 has Furphy at 6'6" 220. That's an ideal UConn SF. If Ball goes NBA, then Mullins slides right in at SG. I have a hunch Hurley is grooming Adams as a facilitator. But we will see what he does in the portal.

Furphy in terms of size, sure. But he's ridiculously slow right now.

Solo and Braylon will both be starting.

Agree on Adams facilitator, but does anyone think Furphy has some PG in him? Watching him handle the ball when he dropped 41 made me wonder.

If our plan at PG next year is Nowell, Mahaney, and Adams my head might explode.

Why? I think Nowell could emerge as a star. Mahaney has gotten much better playing at our pace. I did list "Transfer" on my list but if Ball comes back this team has all of the guards we carry.

Not sure what people are expecting. UConn teams usually carry a max of 5 guards total (4 the last two years, 5 with Castle). We have Mahaney, Nowell, Adams, Mullins, Ball. Arguably also Ross but let's call him a SF.

The main need is at the forward spots. I'm probably more comfortable with Stewart at the 4 than some here. I don't know what we have in Abraham. I'd like a more physical/inside transfer PF to at least back up Stewart. I see Furphy as a SF, but I don't think we have a starer at SF right now. Mullins doesn't seem to have the size/strength for it the way McNeeley does.

Why? Because it would be crazy going into the season with a kid (Mahaney) who isn't a point guard and a totally unproven point guard (Nowell) who would be basically playing his first season.

Point guard is our main need, we need a large sized proven point guard from the portal.

That gets into what we aren't allowed to discuss here, if you know what I mean. We carried 4 guards the last two years. We have 5 already next year. We aren't carrying 6.

I don't see relying on Nowell as being any worse than relying on KEA or relying on sophomore Kemba. He's been good when he has played. I'm fine relying on him and expect they view Adams as a potential Newton like PG.
