I take all these recruit/transfer rankings less seriously than I used to since we've seen it doesn't really mean as much as some think it does. In the UConn staff I trust! But 247Sports is higher on McNeeley and Nowell than the average of all the ranking services. I was just curious who ranked McNeeley so much lower since I know ESPN had him at #9. To get to a composite of #17 someone had to have him a lot lower. Here is where all the recruiting services have him.

Yeah, we're ranked #11, which is 10 spots behind Duke. Unlike Duke, though, we won't have four or five of our recruits hitting the portal next year; instead, at least two of our guys will be here for at least two or three years. So then, while Duke reloads with the #1 class, yet again, our guys will be leading us to NC #7.

That Abraham ranking is surprising. I would have thought he was a riser.

But it mean absolutely nothing.

12 in the top 100 for the Big East, seems like pretty good rectifying to me.

I had a post on this forum explaining the RSIC, and someone deleted the post for some reasonbeyond Me. They all use an average and some other factors such as standard deviation, but I'd still like to know how they got to 17.

The Abraham one doesn't make sense. They had him at #57 last June and by all indications he's gotten a lot better throughout the year so #81 is weird.

"The Swiss Army Knife" award goes to the player that has shown to be the most versatile prospect. Due to Liam McNeeley's skillset, he was a shoo-in for this distinction.

McNeeley is a perfect pairing for Dan Hurley thanks to his tremendous IQ and skillset at 6-foot-7. He has shown the ability to handle the ball, initiate an offense, distribute, drills shots and also score off the bounce. McNeeley will be able to operate in roles as a shooter by flying off screens and drilling 3s.

McNeeley can shoot at an extremely high level, but he can also impact a game in every other areas while remaining a scoring threat.

Duke and Rutgers joined eight different recruiting classes that featured two top-five signees. Of those eight, five failed to reach the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Kentucky's historic 2011 recruiting class, which featured Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, was the only one to win a national championship.

Duke, Rutgers have two recruits in top five, but that doesn't guarantee instant success in NCAA Tournament

How does Rivals have Edgecombe #25?! Have they actually watched him play? Kid is crazy talented and has played well in the games ive seen him in.

I can see an argument for McNeeley as Swiss Army Knife based on 3 point proficiency, but, both Flagg & Harper have pretty good cases and are higher rated, so I don't see 'shoo-in' as to this. Remind me what skill Flagg doesn't have? I would say the swiss army knife includes defense where Flagg's elite shot blocking would get my vote.

Swiss Army Knife isn't a term that's typically used for the biggest superstar.

Honestly the rankings should really go by the average score of the classes with at least 2+ recruits.

Not saying Duke doesn't have a great class, but you could probably beat UConn with a class of 4 or 5 mid to low 4-stars

The portal makes getting the top recruits less important. All of the top 25 guys are looking to be one and done, and if it doesn’t happen they are going to portal to a new school in year 2. It is hard to win with 2 or 3+ freshmen starting and all of the top 25 want to start right off the bat. I think the ideal mix is to get one 5 star recruit + some 30-60 rank recruits who will stay for 2+ years and some 70-100 rank recruits who will stay for 3+ years. Combine that with a couple of talented portal xfrs each year.
This allows you to field a team with experience and some 5 star talent. I think Hurley recruited exactly what he wanted. If Karaban comes back we are in excellent shape.

Duke and Kentucky’s roster full of 5 star freshmen recruits hasn’t worked out for them at all. The lone exceptions are when tone of those 5 star recruits turns out to be a generational superstar like Anthony Davis, or Paulo Banchero.
I think the only miss / regret is not being able to get Cooper Flagg, but that was an uphill battle given Duke was his childhood dream school.

An example of what I am talking about in last post, is I think we are better off with Reed than Ngonba. Reed is more likely to play 2 years at UConn, than Ngonba playing 2 years at same school and Reed will be better in these 2 years. I think whatever team Ngonba portals to in the coming years will be the school that most benefits from his talent.

Abaham was supposed to be raw offensively last summer. The guy I saw in March (in admittedly limited action) was far more polished that I would have imagined he would be at this point.

From that viewing, the only thing holding him back from being an impact freshman is the depth already on the team. He will very much be in the shoes that Stewart and Ball (and potentially Ross) will be vacating to take on a larger role in year 2.

No matter where he is ranked, I am quite glad UConn has him.

Another follow up article from 247Sports from the update of their rankings. Predictions on conference freshman players of the year. Not exactly rocket science predicting Liam McNeeley in the Big East.

BIG EAST— LIAM MCNEELEY (CONNECTICUT COMMIT)​

Ranking: No. 10 overall

Liam McNeeley made one of the best decisions of this recruiting cycle by committing to back-to-back national champions, the UConn Huskies. Dan Hurley will surround him with players with winning habits. It is the ideal situation for McNeeley as he will only be required to play to his strengths and contribute by complimenting others.

Then I saw this in the article where they have contenders for BY FOY. Is this written by a Yarder? Oy vay.

No. 31 Ahmad Nowell (Connecticut), No. 36 Jackson McAndrew (Creighton), and No. 40 Thomas Sorber (Georgetown) are the names that have legit chances at winning this award.

With Hassan Diarra back and Aiden Mahaney transferring into UConn, there will be less of an opportunity for Nowell to find meaningful minutes. However, his strength, toughness and ability to generate offense could allow him to carve out a space in the Huskies' rotation.

He's 6-7 and a lockdown defender and a physical freak who needs some work offensively? We'll take that all day long. We've had a few of those kind of guys who are in or on their way to the NBA. Andre and Castle come to mind.

Abraham shoots it better than both, but Castle and Andre Jackson had much better handle and playmaking ability. I think Castle and Andre were probably a little stronger as defenders too because of their athleticism(Andre’s quick twitch athleticism and Steph Castle’s strength and lateral agility). Not saying Isaiah’s athleticism won’t take another leap this summer though.

Drawing the assignment of Cooper Flagg, being the 6’10 athletic freak that he is, at the Chipotle National Championship showed some deficiencies that Hurley and co will be able to work on in Abraham’s game. I definitely believe Abraham will be an NBA player after 2 or 3 seasons in Storrs.

I know this is a difficult time for many on the "Yard", what with no games for another six months, but who really cares about where some "experts" rank players when our staff has proven what's important to winning is not the "shiny objects" that the Dukies and Cal focus on?

We got excited about rankings when we didn't get any highly rated recruits or win any championships. Now? Fuggedabout it.

When I wear UConn gear I have yet to hear anyone ask how many five stars we had or the ranking of our recruiting class, but I've heard time and again about how impressed they were with the way we play and how a game can be close and five minutes later it's a 15 or 20 point differential and the game is over.

Enjoy the Summer, look forward to the 2025 commits, and relax about where McNeeley is ranked. He looks like another Castle in the making and won't it be more fun to hear what the experts say about him at the end of the year?
