2026 Coaching Hires (the crazy season)

Things aren't looking good on this front so far. Grant's headed to TCU and Kymora's looking elsewhere.

I think next season's going to be a bit rough for the Hoos. Roussell's supposedly bringing his entire staff (like Mox did in 2022), which spells disaster when it comes to winning ACC games. Additionally, Mox really screwed UVA over with her poor high school recruiting efforts beyond the 2023 class.
It will be interesting to see if Kymora “ re-interviews” with UVA and Russell . He is well respected in her home state of Virginia.

He's already checked in with the returnees/portal players. He gave a very tepid "I hope for retention" response, which does not say much about their chances of bringing anyone currently in the portal back, let alone Kymora.

He may be respected in Virginia, but so is Vanessa Blair-Lewis at George Mason. So is Sean O'Regan at JMU. So is Erin Dickerson Davis at William & Mary. And well, so is Megan Duffy at Virginia Tech. You see where I'm going with this? He wasn't head and shoulders above any of them, and him having the UVA job now does not change that.

As for Mo, she's got her sights set on more basketball success after the team stumbled into a Sweet 16. If Roussell can't promise her at least that for her senior year, she needs to leave and not look back. TCU and South Carolina can at least offer her an Elite 8. I don't know that UCLA can, but I won't bet against Cori Close.

Would Kymora go to UCLA or would UCLA still need her now that they've signed Bonnie Deas?

She can play the 1 or 2 so I don’t see why she wouldn’t consider UCLA. Frankly, I think Cori will load up in the portal with good players at other positions.

I'm not sure if you're talking about Kymora or about Bonnie here.

If you're talking about Kymora, then I have to disagree. Maybe she's capable of playing the 2, but she didn't do much of that at UVA because Mox insisted on her having the ball in her hands for 35+ minutes a game. They had capable PGs there with her (Yonta Vaughn, Jillian Brown, and Gabby White), but those players hardly ever played on the ball enough for Kymora to slide over to the 2 in any appreciable way.

UVA never had a starting SG worth much during Kymora's time there (Paris Clark was decent but not All-ACC), which made the decision to keep Mo as the primary PG even more puzzling.

I've always said that Kymora was more of a SG than a true PG, but that's not what Mox wanted for her. Given that UVA didn't win much under Mox, that probably wasn't the best decision.

I would assume that Cori Close would sell them on playing them together ala CLW and Kiki Rice.

I thought Dawn Staley would be on the phone the moment Liv McGill entered the portal but haven’t heard any rumblings there which makes me suspect SC is all in on Johnson. PG is probably the only glaring need on the roster.

I recall Bianca Jackson’s parents, Lewis Jackson and Freda Freeman-Jackson, were longtime coaches at the same time at Alabama State, a D1 HBCU. So this tweet I believe is false on that count.
Yes. From 2005-2020. Freeman-Jackson just retired last year.

Southie, Rhody women’s hoop was about as bad as you could have gotten when Tammi took over. She elevated them so much and raised the talent, expectations and attendance to unbelievable levels. There are 22 D1 programs in New England and URI is now second in NE in attendance behind UConn. Kingston, RI is not exactly anywhere that people can get to easily (nearly as bad as Storrs). She also had her players go and support all the other women’s sports on campus. She will always have my respect and admiration.

It's great that Reiss breathed so much life into the Rhode Island's women's basketball program.

But, I still think Florida overpaid to hire her based on her resume'. Seems like just about every good player on Florida's roster has entered the portal after the Reiss' hire. She has her work cut out for herself building her first-year roster after so many defections.

Final four pedigree? Shouldn't you make it to one for you to have a final four pedigree?
Its a stretch, but she was on the staff (not a coach, one of those weird analytics roles) of South Carolina one of the years they won a Natty. Still, I remember seeing her on the bench and I think in coaches huddles that season, at least at times.

Well, that cuts down any talk that Coach Q might've been returning for her third stint coaching at her alma mater, Notre Dame.
So, stay tuned on who will be hired to take the place of Micahaela Mabrey.
Not a bad hire for Adia. Some folks are better assistants than they will ever be head coaches. Of course, the jury is out on Adia, period.

Agree....Coach Q was a solid assistant for Coach McGraw and Coach Ivey during her two stints with the Irish, which sandwiched a 10-year (?) stint at Penn State, some of which was good and a bunch that was blaah. (Rutgers was a dumpster fire for all concerned.).

Something just ain't right down the road in Buies Creek. A few weeks ago, the mens coach stepped down after only one year saying that it was apparent that Campbell has shifted its commitment away from basketball. Now this..
