Whoa now......don't be comparing Curry to Kiffin. That just doesn't seem fair when you look at the history of these two. 😉
 
Curry's move is weird to me and going to USF even weirder. It's a great area to be in and a decent school but far from the level of SEC. Maybe she's looking for less stress and expectations in the final years of coaching.

Bama is just smack in the middle of a tough conference.

I saw a report yesterday that Alabama spent $6 million on women's basketball this past season which was last in the SEC. For comparison, most other SEC programs spent between $8 and $13 million. Based on other rumors (conflicts with the AD), I think this transition may have more to do with Alabama not valuing women's sports more than anything else.

If she's a draw as a coach, then maybe go to a league where there's a better chance at success. Yes, UA made the tourney, however maybe the night in and out of SEC battles is wearing thin? Or maybe she likes FL better. Tampa is not a bad place to be.

Yes, I saw that, too.
Curry has produced five straight 20+ win seasons and been given bottom of the barrel support. She gets the Tide to the NCAAs and two of her recent players are in the W.

OK, table didn't want to increase the purse, so she went off to another one to ply her craft. Good for her.

From my salary data, Curry was the lowest paid coach in the SEC ($650K) depending on what Tammi Reese is getting at Florida. So the school intially paid her to come from the Big 10 years ago, it has not kept up the "maintenance" required to really compete.

As you say, good for her....

Well, it depends what school in the SEC is dealing it and to what team.
Alabama, who you think would be drowning in donor cash, didn't see fit to give their coach -- the one with five 20+ win seasons in a row -- enough to keep her from leaving the Crimson Tide and the SEC to go to USF. Speaks volumes. Enjoy the Gulf, Coach Curry.

Curry hasn't coached in the Big 10 since 2006. She left for Texas Tech and coached there until 2013.

Yeah, Curry bolted from Texas Tech to Alabama rather unexpectedly. My recollection is that she was close to being fired so leaving voluntarily was her best option.

So, I'm not gonna be feel too sorry for her getting a low budget Alabama; she chose that job at the time. But, I applaud her for once again taking the initiative to find greener pastures.
 
Florida seems to have way overpaid for Tammy Reiss. I don't think one NCAA tourney bid in her seventh season at Rhode Island validates $950k. For that salary, I would have thought Florida would have hired a proven commodity like Kristy Curry.

She has been well considered for years, Rutgers fans were panting for her a bit when CVS retired.

Four seasons are outstanding and you almost have to discount the first 2. I don't think RI was particularly good before she came and the Atlantic 10 isn't a bad conference. They (conference members) have long benefited from playing power conference teams and being competitive, as opposed to the little sisters that fill in so many power conference schedules. And when it comes NCAA time, the conference sometimes sneaks a second bid (like this year) and once in a great while, a third before recent Power conference changes.

Which four seasons are you referencing? Making the NIT is not "outstanding" in my book. Maybe "outstanding" for Rhode Island's program, but not "outstanding" for someone about to be paid $950k a year.

Hey, hey., my Lone Star colleague..are you a little on edge after the Texas guys lost on a tip-in? 😉
From your perspective, I might see where you're coming from, but keep in mind that one reason so many of these mid-major coaches are valued is their ability to turn chicken into chicken salad. You might not dig the initial restaurant it was served in, but consider where it came from. Thar's hard work, my friend.

Did Florida, perhaps, bid against itself here? Possibly. But if they increased the NIL payout for her to get her to come and/or to succeed, then the overpay might be worth it.

Gosh knows the program pays out a lot of cash for most other sports....

Without the humor, much of what @Dillon77 said.

It only matters how outstanding it was for a coach in the A10 to have the win / loss records that she did. At the time you are referring to, the post-season opportunities for teams not making the NCAA from non-power conferences were less than now and making the WNIT at the time could be viewed as an accomplishment. And she gained experience - per what I said elsewhere - playing in a conference that plays a lot of the East Coast power teams in the OOC.

To be clear, I don't think coaches salaries should be what they are, but they are. It is a high salary but maybe that's what it takes to convince someone who almost certainly has had other options to get there.
 
You pretty much have to pay market value to get the coach you want. Caldwell came from D2&D3 to Tenn and is at $1 million per year.

SEC women's bball coach now appears to be set at $1 million for a new coach and NCAA tourney aspirations.
