Based on my post from five years ago, only once has a player won a WNBA MVP without being in the Top 6 for both Win Shares (WS) and Player Efficiency Rating (PER).

This season there are 4 players who met that criteria (minimum 500 MP):
A'ja Wilson - 1st WS and 1st PER
Napheesa Collier - 2nd WS and 2nd PER
Aliyah Boston - 4th WS and 6th PER
Alyssa Thomas - 5th WS and 3rd PER

Note: Listed alphabetically, maximum of one 1 player listed per team.

Who is your pick?

Boston making the cut is kind of crazy. At first I thought you were trolling until I read your reasoning. I guess she falls prey to the same issues as AT where the stats are not eye poppingly out of this world yet she brings so many intangibles to the team.

With that said, my vote is with A'ja. A fourth MVP would put her in a category of her own and solidify her as the goat of all goats.

This is 2025. Suggested title change.

POLL: 2025 WNBA MVP

Personally, I think this decision should be made AFTER the championship is determined since it involves the two favorites to win it all. (AND Yeah, Boston is nowhere near the MVP discussion despite "4th WS and 6th PER."

Might also be worth correcting the typo in Phee's name, since she's not Phess. ;)

I think you have the wrong player from Indiana. Not that she has a remote chance of actually winning, but it should be Mitchell not Boston.

I appreciate the feedback, unfortunately even as the poster I can't edit the title or options in the POLL.

If admin can edit, that would be much appreciated.

I agree that Kelsey Mitchell (5.6 WS & 19.9 PER) is much more likely to receive MVP votes than Aliyah Boston (7.1 WS & 22.8 PER) but I included Boston as she met the Top 6 analytics criteria. A similar thing can be seen in Atlanta with Brionna Jones (6.8 WS & PER 22.6) and Allisha Gray (7.7 WS & 19.7 PER).

I have edited my titles in the past. Have you tried?

EDIT
Just tested on a 3 moth old post of mine. Yes, you can edit your own titles

Does anybody know what player has the most top five nominations in wbb history?

Gotta love Lisa Leslie bringing some perspective to the MVP award. I think she makes a good point with respect to how this award could go to anyone by using her career as an example.

Leslie may be one of my all-time favorite vets. Pretty much every time I hear her I learn something new or hear something insightful, and she's also funny as h*eck.

Almost that time.

I as write this it is 19-16 Wilson over Collier.

I didn't do a WNBA MVP poll last year, unanimous to Wilson, but the 3 previous years our poll has correctly picked the winner. Will that continue this year?

Multiple time poll respondents are 13-6 Wilson over Collier
First time poll respondents are 10-6 Collier over Wilson

The multiple time poll respondents who picked Collier this season historically have a better accuracy:
  • 6 unique users who picked Collier have in the past been correct 60% (6 of 10)
  • 13 unique users who picked Wilson have in the past been correct 38% (8 of 21)

Hillmon as 6th woman of the year is a bit of a cheat, since she was a full time starter by the end of the year, but I'm not mad at it!

I'd think it's a pretty safe bet the 5 MVP finalists are your WNBA all first team too, and I don't think you'll get a lot of complaints there. Second team will be interesting, as there are a lot of great options.

If I'm the Lynx, I almost want Wilson to get the MVP this year--you don't need to see her with an extra chip on her shoulder.

I'm browsing this thread and then get an ESPN notification that A'ja has won MVP for the 4th time! 😁

I don't see any official news or writing from legitimate sources yet but someone post the voting numbers when they're made public. I'm curious how close of a vote it was.

It's Shams doing his semi-annual "contribution" to covering the WNBA. Love and hate that he does this at the same time. 😆

Couldn't have gone wrong with Phee or A'ja. Hope this motivates Phee to dominate the rest of the postseason

Congrats to A’ja! Incredible feat to be a 4x MVP before 30. If she wins a 3rd title this year I think it strongly gives her an argument for the GOAT title in WNBA history.

Also congrats to Collier who undoubtedly would have garnered more votes had she stayed healthy.

The rest of the playoffs should be great, especially if these two meet up in the finals.

Congrats, A'ja!! 4X League MVP. Huge moment in the history of the WNBA. There have been many greats in the past who did not reach this milestone and A'ja has surpassed some of those greats likes of Lauren Jackson, Lisa Leslie, Sherly Swoopes, EDD, Maya Moore, and Cynthia Cooper. Well done, A'ja!!

Here's the vote breakdown from Terrika Foster-Brasby, who is part of the voters for these awards.

There is some interesting data here.

1) One voter seemed to put Allisha Gray over AT at 3rd, otherwise Wilson, Collier, and Thomas got all the votes in the top 3. No 4th place votes for A'ja 😜

2) My girl Boston got one 4th and two 5th place votes to have her tie with Nneka for 6th! She is the youngest player to get a vote (23).

3) Some of the 4th and 5th place votes are a little odd to me particularly Rhyne Howard and Rikea Jackson. They're both great players but I feel like there was a little favoritism in the selections...

4) It's weird seeing Stewie with only one 5th place vote.

5) Forwards dominated the votes. I think this will be changing soon, we're just in an era with really dominant players in the frontcourt. Looking at the young WNBA talent and talent in college, I think we're at the beginning of a guard dominant era with the likes of Bueckers, Clark, Citron, and Juju. I guess we'll see. Boston, Strong or Malonga may play spoiler to this narrative.

WHAT AN ABSOLUTE FARCE.

Phee had a 50/40/90 season, her team was far and away the best team in the regular season, and in the game where her injury occurred that cost her MVP, the Lynx beat the Aces by 50.

And DO NOTTTTTT come for me and say the Lynx had more help. Jackie Young received first place votes(no other KLynx player did), the Aces have 4 Olympians, 3 #1 picks, a #2 pick, and Chelsea Gray, who these idiot GM's voted the best guard in the league to start the season.

Re: #4

Why? She is, has been, and always will be, the most disrespected superstar this league has ever seen.
