Bit more on Franklin/PSU offset language: Penn State Could Owe James Franklin Very Little of Buyout

“Franklin and Penn State could have negotiated a settlement after his firing, but the terms of his 2021 contract extension, obtained by Front Office Sports, read: “Should Coach obtain such applicable employment prior to the date this Contract would otherwise have expired, the University’s obligation to make payments to Coach … will be offset by the total compensation earned by Coach from such applicable new position through the end of the otherwise unexpired term of this agreement.”

In other words, whatever new salary he receives from his next job will offset what Penn State owes him in a buyout. And Franklin is obligated to search for a new job, according to the deal. That language, known as “duty to mitigate,” states: “Once terminated, Coach is obligated to diligently search for and make a good faith effort to obtain another position appropriate for his skill set (i.e., coaching, scouting and broadcasting only) and to provide the university upon request with evidence that he is seeking such employment.” Franklin is also required “to make good faith efforts to obtain the maximum reasonable salary” at his new job.
Hearing that Virginia Tech is going to pay James Franklin around $9 million per year. Could explain why the settlement from Penn State is only $9 million.

Its been reported that to avoid drawn-out calculations, ongoing disputes, or the need to monitor his future earnings under the contractual duty to mitigate PSU contract language - both parties negotiated a settlement of $9 million, which Franklin accepted as final payment. This allowed him to start fresh at Virginia Tech without financial ties to Penn State lingering.

Kiffin has ruled out Florida, so it's LSU or Ole Miss.

AAAAAAND,
Dabo has interviewed at Arkansas. That would be a disaster for him, but is probably good to get some love from Clemson's fans who will realize what they could lose.

That guy also posted that Mario Cristobol officially interviewed with Arkansas, and that Arkansas officials went to Tampa to meet with Jon Gruden. Not sure I would trust him.

a part of me also wonders if the B1G is secretly trying to find a way to kick out Rutgers & Maryland too, honestly. Unlikely, but with all the new additions and with properties like UNC and FSU / miami on the horizon, more mouths to feed = gotta make cuts somewhere. These 2 don't matter anymore to the equation, as far as I can see.

would be great to have them join us at the P5 "rejects" table lol
Welcome back, Jersey!
Do we have to explain Rule #1 again to you? 😉

Yeah I was sorta wondering about that. But several news folks retweeted him -- I thought surely they would do some due diligence?

Mea culpa on me.
I think part of it is that great race for "breaking news". There is so much fake Twitter stuff out there that it is hard to keep up. I'm just surprised he hasn't had them talking to Urban Meyer yet lol.

Mario Cristobol can't get it done at Miami, he definitely will get dog walked at Arkansas. Lol

-> Akron’s season ended on Tuesday with a win over Bowling Green to finish with a 5-7 record, and head coach Joe Moorhead could be a name to watch at a few places. That includes the offensive coordinator job at Virginia Tech under Franklin or the UConn head job if Jim Mora leaves. Moorhead was Franklin’s OC at Penn State from 2016 to ‘17, and he was the OC on the 2010 UConn team that reached the Fiesta Bowl. Mora himself has received interest from jobs out west, like Oregon State and Stanford. <-

I could understand if Stanford opens up the checkbook and Mora leaves for there. I'd be shocked if Mora left UConn for Oregon State.

If it happens I will be prepared with names to recommend. But that's a big if. Now, if we're already in a conference, it would be a different story.

And no doubt AD Dave wouldn’t make a move until he got your list! LOL

PS I don’t think Joe Moorhead would be high on my list.

Mora makes $2.1 million if Stanford job is offered it will at least pay $5 million which would more than double his salary (Shaw made $8 million). But I do not think Mora will leave UConn just for more money. I think it has to be the right opportunity. Would he consider Stanford that right opportunity? I have no idea.

It's a very good list. I will be emailing him if necessary. No doubt he has an excellent list himself and I would hope that we have some similar names.

Andrew Luck & Jim Mora… interesting duo to shake free additional resources.
Stanford is an interesting school. Could easily fund football at a high level via the billionaire alumni. In the past Stanford did not seem keen to pursue high level football. Not sure anything has changed.

I don't know how many players - current Penn State players and recruits - Franklin is bringing with him to Va Tech but I'm curious if that is a factor for a program hiring a new coach. I do know many players decommitted from Penn State. Va Tech is getting a great coach and probably some great players and should immediately challenge for the ACC Championship next year. That's a win for everyone. Jim Mora may be a great P4 coach but he would not be bringing any 5 star players with him. If anything, a P4 program hiring Mora may lose players and recruits.

Oregon State is like rebuilding us all over again. Unless he really wants to go West doesn't make sense to me. Stanford on the other hand I could see meaning more to him. I agree with Moorhead being low on my list.
