So I imagine that most ADs try to have this type of mitigation clause included now. Back in the past, in many contracts, there was no reduction in the buyout unless you got another head coaching job. This lead to a lot of “special consultant to the head coach” gigs, post-termination.

He will do what he does. Recruit well, win 9 games a year, go bowling and be an arrogant . If they can’t get little Beamer, they Shd hire him. Their fall has been hard to watch.

He’d win 7-9 games a season and lose the big ones. But first he would have to rebuild the place.

Why would Beamer go there? VT is a top tier ACC job and South Carolina is a bottom tier SEC job. Much easier to win consistently at VT.
 
I don’t get why programs fire coaches in mid season. There is no financial incentive to do so, and it sends the message to the players that the season is over and they should prepare for the Transfer Portal. It can turn a 7-5 season into a 2-10 one pretty quickly.

The wheels really need to be off for a mid season firing to make sense.

It's ridiculous, especially in this case. The bigger message is that the program itself lacks commitment. Coaches can coach and teach teamwork, loyalty, brotherhood all day long but lose 2 games in a row and you're sheet-canned. So much for all for one. Of course there are probably other issues going on but it still makes no sense.

As for Penn State, I used to be a fan but I hope it fails every year. The program let that abusive predator continue his assaults. It should have been banned from football.

You wonder how some of the legendary coaches would survive in the current environment. Rockne went 7-1-1 in 1927, then 5-4 in 1928. Would the internet be calling for his head? Think he was past his prime? He went unbeaten the next 2 seasons. Bear Bryant had a stretch when he went 6-5, 6-5-1, finished 8th and 7 th in the SEC. Then he went 11-1 4 of the next 5 years. 10-2 in the other year.

Preseason 2 lost 3 in a row including 2 where they were 20 point favorites. That qualifies as wheels off at some places.

Some reasons schools would change mideseason
1) You’ve decided to get rid of the coach and you have a rush of donors revved up willing to pay the buyout (and you think that might fade)
2) you think he’s lost the locker room
3) you want to get an early jump on getting a replacement
4) you want to stave off pkayers opting out for the rest of the year or already lining up transfer destinations
5) you feel pressure from alums to act NOW, and not doing so makes you look weak

Im not saying I agree either all of these for this case, but #2 looms large for me. The players were flat for the last 2 games. That’s coaching. It’s his job to make sure they are focused on the task at hand and ready & not just feeling sorry for themselves.

If you asked 100 Hoosiers would they rather win a BB Championship or Football....99 would say Basketball

They could not careless if they keep playing at their current level. As great as BB championships are, they take a backseat to football success. Shouldn’t be that way, but the pocketbooks vote otherwise.

I wouldn't be surprised if football were actually in the majority today. Indiana is sitting atop the Big Ten standings and ranked 3rd in the country. You gotta strike while the iron is hot. Bonus is becoming the best football school in Indiana.
