Fired college football coach's wife takes bitter swipe at former school's roster

The wife of former UMass head coach Don Brown has blasted the school's decision to fire her husband after pointing to its astonishing lack of NIL money compared to other teams.

Yet while he departs with a poor 2-8 record this season, Brown's wife Deborah has fumed that her husband was actually performing miracles with the roster at his disposal after claiming UMass's roster falls well below the NIL value of its rivals.

She wrote on X: 'The combination of NIL money of the teams UMass played this season is a combined $48,798,653 million dollars to our $36,000. And we played how many teams so close?!'

One user replied: '360K did you mean? Has to be more than 36K.'

But Deborah confirmed: 'Correct amount !'

Other fans were left in disbelief after the NIL revelation, with one writing: 'Yeah that was a impossible situation'.

Another said: 'NIL in its current form is ruining college athletics... UMass will always be UMass and never win anything meaningful... but this disparity is just gross'.

While one simply posted: 'Coach Brown is a wizard!!'

According to my buddy, he thinks the UMass football NIL is in the neighborhood of $300k.

It's a tough way for Brown to go, but they need a reset as they go the MAC. Brown is going to be 70 and UMass probably needs 2 years to become competitive in the MAC so it's better to move on given the poor record. And, NLI starts December 4th (earlier than in the past), so it's better to let commits know the situation now. Ideally, they should have negotiated a retirement.

It’s not a swipe at the roster. It’s a swipe at lack of support versus the support that the opponents on their schedule get. Really a swipe at the AD.

Their AD is AWFUL. It’s not even debateable.

Good for her sticking up for her husband.

I'd be curious to see what the average NIL budget is for fellow MAC schools. It most likely is above $300k but I wouldn't be shocked if it's not that much more. So while we might be appalled by this number, it might fit right in with their future home.

Wow -that's wild. Reno is lifelong northeasterner with no FBS experience. Not saying it's a bad choice but definitely surprising.

Rice would be a good place to go. Texas recruiting, easy access as they're in Houston, decent history and good academics. Probably will have lower expectations to build your rep at FBS.

I dunno. Looks like it was easy from the outside. A cherished friend and colleague could have coached the final 2 and maybe even retired. Firing him 2 weeks before season ends just flies in the face of that narrative he put out to make him look like a decent guy to work for.
