Makes sense w/ non-conference games up in the air...

>> However, UConn, Yale, Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart have all agreed to return to the event in January 2022 and 2023, according to SNY, which conceived and televises the event. Connecticut Ice is slotted in for Jan. 29 and 30 both years.

“As disappointed as we are about the festival in 2021, we are thrilled that all of our key partners have committed to the future of Connecticut Ice and the opportunity to keep growing hockey in the state,” said SNY president Steve Raab. “Never did we think, when we left Webster Bank Arena after the championship game this past January, that we would be in the position we are today. With so many levels of uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, we simply can’t produce the festival in the manner it deserves. We look forward to welcoming everybody back in 2022 and we will not stop working hard to build on the momentum developed during our first year.”<<

It makes sense why? As soon as hockey east sets it's schedule, the schools could find a way to play it. There should be plenty of room in the schedule. Heck, Lamont might even be letting fans in by .....whenever.

It makes sense because:
a. There is a global pandemic going on
b. It is not the sort of thing you can re-schedule in 2-weeks if 1 or more teams are unavailable due to that pandemic
c. Schools want to have flexibility in their schedules in the event that games need to be postponed due to the pandemic
d. The leagues all seem to be moving toward conference only schedules.
e. Even if fans can attend, a question for sure, not sure they will and in any case, how do you market “well, maybe you can come, to see teams who probably will play but we aren’t really certain if there is an outbreak at one of them...”.
f. Why incur the costs when it is so up in the air?

There is talk that the Beanpot will be played but there is also talk it won’t for exactly the above reasons. I think we can all agree CT Ice is not the Beanpot. In any case 3/4 of that tourney also play in Hockey East so if need be you could, for example, make any Matchups between league teams league games if you needed to do make up games.

Well, if it was just HE schools that might work, but you are also dealing with the ECAC and AH. With the Ivies having cancelled all fall sports, the ECAC is trying to come up with a schedule that can squeeze in a full season of league play beginning in January, so anything after the start of the new year wouldn't fit. Yale would undoubtedly be out under that scenario as they won't even practice as a team until the holiday season. QU may be able to practice earlier, so they might be open to a holiday season tournament if they have no conflicts. However, that might not work for UConn or SHU, who probably have their own rescheduling nightmares to address. With just a one year history this tournament is a nice-to-have instead of a must-have and I'll bet it just works better for all parties to take it off the table for this year and commit to restart when we have a normal college schedule.

Oh and I guess we could also add a g to the list

g. The season is going to start late which means thre is going to be much less opportunity for teams to fit in a full weekend of non-conference play especially that late. Maybe if it were a season opener to give everyone a warm up almost like a pre season event but that would require all leagues to start around the same time. As has been pointed out that is unlikely.

Yeah, it seemed unlikely this would’ve happened given the things under discussion this far. I had thought there might be a push for “conference plus two” so that things like the Beanpot and GLI would happen as planned, but this lends credence to the idea that people aren’t going to risk it. Same as the report the ECAC was moving to effectively two divisions.

Right. I doubt any of those events will happen given all the leagues aware seemingly playing only within themselves and the reduced schedule and calendar.
