I mean we already knew the NBE would increase the level of competition dramatically. But yeesh the AAC sucks
It’s about what I expected but seeing the conferences side by side helps illustrate how wide the gap is, especially when looking at the bottom six of the American. What’s even more wild is that UC San Diego is new to D1 and they have a higher Kenpom ranking (186) than Tulane (202).

That's a nice view. There's some good ball right there, such a better conference.

KenPom preseason doesn't account for any new players (IIRC) so not surprising to see us at 43. All based on potential for this team

Losing the +100 games from our conference schedule is huge. Those wins meant nothing in the AAC and any loss was a potential bid killer.

Last year at the end of the season when we were playing Tulane in what looked like an empty high school gym I said to myself "at least the realignment Gods had a little mercy on us, we could continue to be doing this every year"

It's a starting point, not an ending point.

No preseason prediction is going to be particularly good. Although 2019 we were preseason 101 and finished 99, so pretty much right on. 2016 was also pretty close. The other years inbetween? No so much.

What sticks out to me immediately is LAST place Gtown is ranked better than 6 AAC teams or more than half of the AAC.

All that really needs to be said...

Just waiting for @freescooter to make his argument on how this doesn't matter...

Yeah, the bottom half of the American was always dragging down the league. The top 5-6 in a given year are quality teams. Also, not fully reflected here, they play crappy weak out of conference schedules. Even the better teams tended to schedule weak opponents.

They also have gone to a 20 game model for this year (because of COVID) but I bet teams like Tulane and East Carolina will push for that to continue in the future. That will hurt the top of the league.

Are you sure that it is because of COVID and not because they now have 11 teams? Easier to play H/H and have 20 league games. Just curious.

I know there are teams at the top that don't want this. So I think it was COVID driven.
