Emmy Awards.
I think the Emmys have become less relevant as television gets more fragmented. There is no way the voters have seen all the prestige shows. Game of Thrones got way too many nominations, while there were quite a few oversights.
I won't go through all of the nominations. Some thoughts:
Succession deserves to win Best Drama, but won't.
Veep was excellent this season, and will clean up. Peter MacNichol absolutely deserves one in Guest Actor, Comedy. He was awesome.
Chernobyl was very strong too, although Jared Harris has to go head to head with Mahershala Ali for Best Actor, Limited Series, and I don't see Harris winning that. Skarsgard deserves one.
I hope Game of Thrones strikes out. All these nominations feel like lifetime achievement awards. Does Theon really deserve an Emmy nomination? Maisie Williams deserved one for Season 2, but not for Season 8.
If they do give one for body of work, it should go to Giancarlo Esposito.
The critics love Barry, but I am lukewarm. I think Billions should have gotten some nominations, and Jeremy Strong from Succession deserved a nomination too.
