There were 8 eight team geographic regions then; each region had it's own selection committee so committee members were really knowledgeable of teams in their region; there was a conference call every Sunday evening from the beginning of the season to selection time to talk teams. There were no automatic bids in D2 at that time (not sure if that's the same now since I've been away for a while).
