I have to give the edge to 2004. That team was stacked.

No one on this team stops Okafor or Gordon. Then the rest of the team is as good or better. I think 04 rolls.

I think there was a thread not too long ago about top 5 uconn teams. I can't even compare this year's team yet since Drummond, Boatright, and Daniels haven't even played yet.

I think it's hard finding a better team than the 2004 squad- it was loaded with stars, leaders, upperclassmen, tremendous size, great shooters, great freshmen, etc . . . .

How will we know till the end of the year? This team could be better but there are a lot more unknowns then that team.

WE ARE DOOMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.-.
I don't understand the point in asking this in September.
There is no point in Sept. But, because it's only Sept., these questions are good to avoid hoops boredom.

letse see... '04 won the 'ship and was probably the best UConn team ever...or '11 who has yet to even officially start practicing..?

The 'yard is a kooky place sometimes.

In my biased opinion, 04 UConn is the best college hoops team of the last ten years or so. The 2011-2012 team has the talent to be on that same level, but the competion we face might be a little stiffer.

What holds the '04 team back, slightly, in terms of historical respect/reputation, is that for all their talent, they lost 6 games.

The '04 team is in that group with '01 Duke (4 losses), '05 UNC (4 losses), '07 Florida (5 losses), and '09 UNC (4 losses). I think they take all of those teams, but that's elite company. If we're talking about the decade around them (99-09), add in the '99 UConn (2 losses) team.

my thoughts exactly. if this team wins a NC then we can have a more precise discussion on which team was better. we don't know since 2011-12 has not stepped on the court yet...

 Absolutely ridiculous question, we obviously won it all in '04. You can't even begin to question which team is better

'08 Kansas? That team went 37-3 and won the most loaded Final Four I've ever seen.

I should include them. They were very good. By my own standards, they should have been included. Am I crazy, then for thinking that all of those other teams would have beaten them (perhaps, because the '08 Kansas team smoked the '08 UNC team that was more or less the exact same group of players).

No, although hind sight (most of those KU players have gone on to have marginal and/or disappointing NBA players) might be influencing you a bit here.

For the record, I would take '01 Duke, '04 UConn, and '08 Florida over them. There were truly some great teams in the past 10 years, though.

Without a doubt the 2003-2004 team was better as far talents goes
Last year 2010-2011 team had the best chemistry I've ever seen in Storrs
But my favorite team hands down was '99, they scrapped their way all year and beat that Duke team who the country had proclaimed champs before the tourney even started, still my favorite...

2004 vs. 2011......Which team is better

Too quote Marisa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny

It's a bull shit question
which nobody can answer....
the team doesn't yet exist since several of the 2011-2012 most important peeps have never played a game in a UCONN uni.

Mona Lisa Vito: It's a bullshit question, it's impossible to answer.
D.A. Jim Trotter: Impossible because you don't know the answer!
Mona Lisa Vito: Nobody could answer that question!
D.A. Jim Trotter: Your Honor, I move to disqualify Ms. Vito as a "expert witness"!
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Can you answer the question?
Mona Lisa Vito: No, it is a trick question!
Judge Chamberlain Haller: Why is it a trick question?
Vinny Gambini: [to Bill] Watch this.
Mona Lisa Vito: 'Cause Chevy didn't make a 327 in '55, the 327 didn't come out till '62. And it wasn't offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till '64. However, in 1964, the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top-dead-center

;)

I know this is meaningless now but keep in mind out of those 6 losses, two of them were pretty much without Okafor. The first Ga Tech game and the season finale at Syracuse Okafor hardly played because of that back injury. That team was by far the most talented and best team that season. Some of those losses i think were caused by the team not giving 100%. They knew how good they were and flipped the switch on when needed. I recall a game vs miami at the civic center in late feb of that year when calhoun was just going crazy on the sideline trying to light a fire under them. I think it worked.

It would be interesting if we could remember just how we felt about the 2004 team going into the season (rather than looking back on a championship season). We knew it would be a good team, but there were some question marks. No one knew if Ben was ever going to translate his potential into reality. How far could a Taliek-run team go?

I still think it would be 2004 as the more talented team, but who knows what things will look like at the end of this year?

04 had two "Kemba" tier players in Okafor and Gordon, this year probably doesn't have any. And as someone said, even after the top two the 04 team is still pretty much even with this one. Plus 04 had the Rashad factor which remains to be seen in this team--I don't think you can discount the value of a guy that can be counted on to make timely shots like that. It's tough to compare any team with a team that won it all and 04 is as tough as any. You're talking about the greatest UConn team of all time in my opinion.

Maybe. But that team had just come off a run to the BET Finals and lost in the S16 to Texas, in Texas, on a fluke (White getting the ball stuck between the rim and the backboard). They came into the season ranked #1, and were getting heaps of praise as the most talented team since the 2001 Duke team.

There are always questions, but that team had but a few.

And yet I would still take the 99 team in a head to head matchup. That team beat what could have been the most talented team in the last 20 years head to head. They really only lost one game
