OT: 2 hour barrier broken in marathon

Just looked it up, there's a kid named Aidan Puffer who is now a sophomore at Manchester high in CT. who set the 14 years of age record for 5000 meters at 14.47, he's been setting world records for his age in that distance the past few years.

I know that kid. His dad is INTENSE about his training.

A 5:00 mile is not remarkable in high school track - it’ll win a lot of dual meets, but if you’re looking for state honors, you’d need to go sub-4:15.

There’s an insanely fast HS soph in southern New York running 4:33 miles!

If I remember correctly, that group mostly got dowb to 4:20-4:25 as they got older. Never good enough to compete individually, but they always did well as a team.

I had 3 kids on a middle school track team break a 5:00 mile in one season maybe 4 years ago when I was still coaching track... just getting some extra $$$ when teaching. And that time wasn't common per se, but there were certainly a few dozen kids that could do it probably. It's interesting how athletes are getting better at every level right now.

Distance runners and soccer players specialize EARLY on average. Probably a big part of it.
I'm not sure how much running times have changed, I'm just going off of memory on my age and time and it's a long time ago. Wish I could remember some of my cross country times.
