OT: 2 hour barrier broken in marathon

I could run around a 5 minute mile (think 5:03 was my fastest 1600) when I was a youngin', 13 years old 1st in CT. and 2nd in New England in junior olympics cross country. I basically peaked athletically at 13-14. Not sure I've run a mile in 15-20 years. Sub 2 hrs. for a marathon is absolutely insane, that's flying.

I had 3 kids on a middle school track team break a 5:00 mile in one season maybe 4 years ago when I was still coaching track... just getting some extra $$$ when teaching. And that time wasn't common per se, but there were certainly a few dozen kids that could do it probably. It's interesting how athletes are getting better at every level right now.

Distance runners and soccer players specialize EARLY on average. Probably a big part of it.

It was a great weekend for marathoners! Radcliffe's record falls after 15+ years and a sub 2hr is a proven possiblity! What an amazing thing! Wouldn't be surprised to see someone break the official record next year in Berlin.

The guy ran 26.2 miles in 1:59:40.

There is simply no way to dismiss or diminish his achievement. It is incredible by any standard and historic. It is landmark in human physical performance.

A 5:00 mile is not remarkable in high school track - it’ll win a lot of dual meets, but if you’re looking for state honors, you’d need to go sub-4:15.

There’s an insanely fast HS soph in southern New York running 4:33 miles!

Just looked it up, there's a kid named Aidan Puffer who is now a sophomore at Manchester high in CT. who set the 14 years of age record for 5000 meters at 14.47, he's been setting world records for his age in that distance the past few years.

I know that kid. His dad is INTENSE about his training.

If I remember correctly, that group mostly got dowb to 4:20-4:25 as they got older. Never good enough to compete individually, but they always did well as a team.

I'm not sure how much running times have changed, I'm just going off of memory on my age and time and it's a long time ago. Wish I could remember some of my cross country times.
