#18 UConn Mid-Week Matchups - 5/8/18 @ 3p vs. Sacred Heart @ J.O.C. & 5/9/18 @1p @ Northeastern

Nice outing for Joe Simeone so far, he's through 4 innings with 1 run allowed. Young talented pitchers like Simeone and Dunlop need these midweek games to develop.

Sac Fly by Woodworth makes it 8-1 in the 4th.

Who are these in-between innings voices? They’re making my ears (and head) hurt.

I’ll take the same ‘ol canned music versus this blather.

WHUS sports staff was short of members while school was in session, I'm guessing for the summer they have disappeared, especially during the midweek. I guess Chris Jones is getting WHUS music staff to fill in as game engineers, and this is what we get. Skunks and stuff we don't want to hear about. But at least the game is on the air.

Moriarty double drives in 2 more runs to make it 10-1 in the 4th, so he has been on base a couple of times today, that's good to see. That lead gives Simeone a little leeway to possibly get through the 5th.

11-1 still in the 4th. Looking like a good day for the back end of the bullpen to get some work.

And on cue - Trevor Holmes in to start the B5th.

Yeah, asking 5 innings from Simeone at this point would be a bit much. Better to get him out while he is ahead with some success today.

Ben Maycock pinch running for Fedko in the 6th. Maycock may actually get an at bat in this one.

Moriarty double drives in Maycock to make 12-1.

Geez. I almost feel bad for SH. But I’ll take the win. It must stink not having a home field.

And finally, Joe Rivera in for the top of the 9th.

Chris Jones has said a few times that Thad Phillips should be available to play this weekend.

Nice showing from the pitching today. In particular it was good to see Avery Point's Avery Santos throw 2 scoreless innings. Santos might have made the team last season, Tommy John surgery late in the fall took care of that. Whatever the case, it is always good to have an Avery Point Pointer with the team from Storrs.

Nice job taking care of business today. Northeastern will be a solid challenge for us tomorrow.

13 Unanswered Runs Lead No. 18 Huskies vs. Sacred Heart

Notes:
  • UConn accumulated a season-high 20 hits (Citadel, March 10, 19 hits). It is the first time the Huskies have notched at least 20 hits since Feb 28, 2016 vs. Alcorn State (23 hits).
  • 10 UConn players recorded a hit, including all nine starters. The first time the Huskies have accomplished the feat this season.
  • Joe Simeone earned his first career win in his second career start.
  • Avery Santos logged a career-high two scoreless innings in just his third appearance back from Tommy John.

And finally, Joe Rivera in for the top of the 9th.

Chris Jones has said a few times that Thad Phillips should be available to play this weekend.

I didn't hear the full game, but I heard most of it. While Chris Jones mentioned more than once that Thad Phillips should be available to play this weekend, there was no mention of either Tim Cate or Ronnie Rossomando returning for the weekend.

Since we don't know what the status of Tim Cate is for coming back to pitch, these midweek games are important for Joe Simeone and Colby Dunlop to get some good innings under their belt. Simeone did well today (albeit against a poor team), now it is Dunlop's turn show something against a tougher Northeastern team.

If Cate does not start a game in the AAC tourney (either being sat out or being used in relief), then someone is going to be the fourth starter after Feole, Kersten, and Gardner. It would seem that one of these someone's is going to be either Dunlop or possibly Simeone. Despite UConn's pitching injury woes, it would have been helpful if either of these guys had gotten a couple more midweek starts just for the experience and possible development.

Big game today. RPI has fallen to #19 after our last 2 games. We could use a good bump (and another Top 50 win) to keep us in the hosting mix.

Also, let's break the road win record!
