I tried to warn everyone about Mercer in the NCAAT announcement thread and was laughed at. Beware of Suzy Gardner.

SC's guards are struggling but their posts are too much for Mercer right now

Great 1st half for Boston and Saxton, and Amihere and Littleton provided great production off the bench, but they can't continue with their starting guards ghosting the game. Destanni and Zia needs to engage.....

After Mercer tied the game at 27-all, Gamecocks close out the half 16-5 that included a 10-0 run, to take the 43-32 lead at the half...

Gamecocks had 8 turnovers in 1st half, only have 3 in 2nd. Of course, Amihere had 3 of those 8, and she hasn't played much after halftime.

Gamecocks were also 4-9 at the free throw line, but have gone 12-12 since. Those are the things that will improve a team's performance in games...

Gamecocks win 79-53 over the Mercer Bears in the First Round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The win was also Coach Dawn Staley's 500th career win as a head coach, so congrats Coach Dawn!

The Gamecocks (23-4) were led by Aliyah Boston with 20 pts on 8-13 shooting, and 18 rebounds. Victaria Saxton also scored 20 pts to tied her career high - she shot 7-10 from the field, and also had 6 rebounds. Zia Cooke rebounded from an ice cold scoring 1st half to score all 13 of her pts in the 2nd half, and added 3 boards and 3 steals. Reserve Laeticia Amihere added 11 pts on 5-11 shooting, and 8 rebounds.

Survive and advance....

51 combined points and 32 combined rebounds from our "Bigs" Boston, Saxton, and Amihere sure helped to ease the loss of Grissett. We'll need our guards more for starting Tuesday.....

OSU’s a scary 8. I think SC wins, but barely.

OSU is certainly scary on paper. They look like a team that should be a monster in the paint, with all those 6-9, 6-4 players. But they average under 40 RPG, barely have a 1.5 rebound margin over their opponents, do not block many shots and do not steal many shots.

Against us they'll probably pull down 60 boards, though. We'll see.....

Much of their length is on paper only. 2 6-6 or taller weren't available to play. One of the 6-9 is a major project. 6-4 Jones is really their only tall player who gets significant minutes.

edit--Corosdale is 6-3 but doesn't really seem all that tall

It's a game I'm concerned about as the Beavs have some big late season wins.

OSU usually plays only one really big big at a time. Like nwhoopfan said.

They have the height to match SC, but not over power them. They are on an upward trend, so their numbers are probably being weighed down from the beginning of the season. This matchup is going to be the closest one for the 1 seeds, IMO. I think the guards are going to decide this game. I wouldn't underestimate Oregon State. Rueck has upset some 1 seeds before. He has game planned against post heavy 1 seeds and came out on top.

In the past 4 games (the SECT and NCAAT 1st RD), Boston has shot 27-45 (.600) from the field, and is averaging 19.5 ppg and 13.0 rpg. Hope I didn't just jinx her, but it's looking like she's stepping it up late....

I watched OSU vs FSU and the major thing I saw was that Florida St doesn’t have any post players that can consistently score, rebound, or defend. Myers was undersized and Baldwin has been a major disappointment so far. On top of that they couldn’t defend to pick and roll screens that OSU just continued to run. SC has struggled with that before but I think we’ve seen it enough to know how to defend it. Oregon St plays a big lineup but they’re not a fast team and they like to play in the half court. SC must bring some pressure and use it’s athleticism to get the ball out of Goodman’s hands and speed them up. If it turns into a track meet it will be over.

Gamecocks win 79-53 over the Mercer Bears in the First Round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The win was also Coach Dawn Staley's 500th career win as a head coach, so congrats Coach Dawn!
On January 11th, 2001...Kay Yow won her 600th game against Staley-coached Temple. In the post-game interview, I remember Staley remarking that she couldn't imagine coaching long enough to win 600 games! It won't be long before she reaches that mark herself.
