The defensive metrics are about to get better. According to Isaac Trotter (I copied and pasted only part of the write up on UConn).

10. UConn has been a little unlucky defensively

There's a real chance that UConn has some positive regression coming its way defensively. Even in Sunday's much-needed, 76-65 road win over Texas, UConn still did not have the Basketball Gods on its side. Texas attempted four guarded catch-and-shoot 3-pointers. It made every single one of 'em.

Also, top 100 teams are averaging 48% 3PT% against us??? No way that keeps up.

Honestly, I don't really care about the total number since there's such a gap between offense and defense. We could have the #1 ORtg but if we are in the 90s for DRtg, then I won't consider us a real March contender. This is a work in progress and it'll be really interesting to see how high Hurley can get this team to by the end of the season

For reference, here is where each champion ended:
  • 2024 UConn: #1 ORtg, #4 DRtg
  • 2023 UConn: #3 ORtg, #7 DRtg
  • 2022 Kansas: #6 ORtg, #17 DRtg
  • 2021 Baylor: #2 ORtg, #22 DRtg (that is surprising if I'm remembering that Baylor defense correctly, they were lockdown)
  • 2019 Virginia: #2 ORtg, #5 DRtg
I recall that Baylor team had good perimeter D but they weren’t big shotblockers for example. Their offense was a buzz saw though with that three headed guard hydra!

there's a good bit of data kenpom wrote about at some point that raw 3pt% is difficult to control by a defense....but in reality what happens is teams take more 3's because they're open more often. So if Uconn's 3pt defense is actually bad, we should also see teams taking more than average shots from 3

And it turns out uconn has the 18th best 3pa/fga in the country. That piece of data confirms the postulate....that uconn's defense, whil still not great, is probably better than the numbers let on.

Big East had 9 last year, so 8 would be 1 less.

Hurley has put the practice focus on offense early in the past two seasons. This is probably especially true with this year's inexperienceed team. However, since Maui I think the emphasis has been more balance between O and D. We've all seen improvements lately on the defensive side. Staying out of foul trouble will help us keep our bigs on the floor and in an agressive posture.
