I'd guess conference tournament games but I don't know for sure.

Yes, certain conference tournaments count as a single game for the purposes of the overall limitation on number of games scheduled. The best way to stack up on games is to play the pre-season WNIT, which can be four games if you win them all.

edit: Baylor was in the pre-season WNIT last year, when they won 40.

How is it we tend to have 39 games in a season yet Baylor played 4o in their undefeated season. Is it possible for UCONN to play 40 or even 41?

Two ways to accomplish that - either play in a in-season 4 game tournament or previously lose enough games in the regular season not to get first/second round byes in the BE tournament! In theory we could have a 42 game season 27+4, plus 5BE, plus 6NCAA
