Help me out here. What is the generally agreed upon definition of a “shooter”? Someone whose main role is to score? Someone who has a high percentage shot? Both? Or something else?

Good question. I would say someone who has a relatively high percentage shot at distance. It often refers to a three point shooter, but I think it also can apply to anyone who’s got a decent mid range game.

Defined

a 'scorer' is a player who, with not necessarily a high success rate, gets enough buckets and free throws within the flow of the game to be considered a meaningful contributor.
a 'shooter' is a player who, whether big volume or not, has a high success rate on any field shot, whether meaningful or not.

Somebody who the defense has to guard out past the 3 point line, and can’t sag in for imminent threat of them scoring. Opens up the lanes for others as well. High %.

Volume means nothing when I’m defining a shooter. Good to great efficiency from mid-range to three point range is a must.
Exactly. That's why I consider MJ one of the best shooters ever. Mid-range he was a killer.

When I was growing up playing, I always got a kick out of coaches yelling "shooter" when the 7th or 8th man came off the bench. Most likely he was not a "shooter."

My definition of a shooter is: someone who's basically only out there because they can shoot well/someone with a great shooting percentage that you have to guard everywhere.

That was me on the freshmen team. But to be clear I was the 8th man off the bench, not the third. I was not a shooter.

The Microwave!

Gwynn was actually more of a scorer than a shooter. He had a great mid range but his overall shooting numbers weren't nearly as good as some other UConn players mentioned in this thread- Ray, Rip, Rashad, Smitty and even Brian Fair.

And Gwynn being the microwave was what UConn needed more than Gwynn the shooter. He was a boost in energy and put another layer of pressure on the defense when he came in to the game.
