Not familiar with many courses up that way but if you're looking for a playable course that's not too long and lets you spray it a bit at a reasonable price I'd recommend Timberlin in Berlin. It's right about 30 miles or so from Southbury. Restaurant on site as well.

I haven't played there since college (a long time ago). It was fine for what we needed back then as poor college kids. Keep in mind we drank like kings with a case of Natty Light for $6.99.

Twin Hills and the Skunk were our 2 go to courses while at UConn. I hate Great River. It's overrated and the price tag is salt in the wounds. There is no level of class that justifies the price tag.
