In addition to their 10 losses, many of their wins were against cupcakes during their OOC schedule. While they did play UCLA, UConn, Louisville, Stanford & NC State, there’s a bunch of teams like TN Martin, Winthrop, Southern IN, etc.
Most NPOY’s are voted on before the tournament. One exception is the Wade Trophy, voted on by the WBCA after the 2nd weekend of the Big Dance. Paige won that last season after dropping 30+, 40 and 30+ in the round of 32, the Sweet 16 and the Elite 8 respectively.
The last time anyone other than UConn received a 1st place vote was on January 5, the first poll of the new year, when TX had 4 of the 32 1st place votes. The Longhorns lost later that week and UConn has earned all 32 1st place votes ever since.
It already is a bloodbath. The biggest concern I see is that there are a number of teams on the bubble, fighting to host or fighting for a top seed that will play with a sense of desperation that frequently manifests itself as rough play with the potential for injury. Just about every season a...
A comment on UConn’s schedule this year. Obviously, the conference schedule is what it is. But Geno historically schedules the toughest OOC schedule in the nation. Unfortunately, a number of the OOC games that were scheduled several years ago turned out to be duds for reasons beyond Geno’s...
Unfortunately, I think that Geno has the same questions you have. Add to the fact that Jana made an incredibly impressive statement today, which might just get her back in the starting lineup.
Jana was an absolute BEAST ON THE BOARDS, pulling down almost a rebound per minute with 16 rebounds in only 19 minutes of play. I am hoping she starts next game because she is BADASS!!!
Some thoughts on the Providence game:
Senior Day is always bittersweet. Other than Serah, the players honored today have missed so many games as a result of major injuries. Caroline, Ice, Ayana & Azzi’s contributions to UConn WBB are deeply appreciated. Assuming they all move on from UConn...
A comment about Serah & Jana’s uneven performance. On the videos I have seen of Serah at WI and Jana at Fiba tournaments, both players were far more comfortable playing “face up” on offense rather than with their backs to the basket. Jana had even demonstrated some proficiency from 3-pt. It’s...
You seem hung up on votes. Columbia is my Alma mater. I watch them all the time. As much as I am a fan of the Lions, they would not beat Villanova.
Teams get better over the course of a season, particularly if they have a good coach. Denise Dillon is an outstanding young coach. Her team is...
While Hillary Knight’s tying goal in regulation was fantastic, Megan Keller’s OT goal to win the game was a spectacular thing of beauty. Wayne Gretzky must have been in awe.
Geno’s 5-out motion offense basically takes away opposing bigs who live in the paint. The image of last year’s national semifinal game when UConn went with their small lineup is forever seared in my brain. Betts, who was matched up with Sarah, was standing in the paint with her arms up while...
