It's hard to understand why Arizona didn't run a hard double team at Fair immediately, near the end when it was obvious she had no intention of giving up the ball to anyone else.
Uconn could run into a Hidalgo problem with her--a high pick and roll whenever Brady is in the game. It doesn't...
The color commentator in the Depaul game said "You see how calm and cool Nika Muhl is." I looked at screen to see if there was another Nika Muhl on the court.
There was also Batouly Camara, who probably would have been a contributor, but was always injured. Clearly the worst was an Australian player named McCormick(can't remember her first name) who was here for one year, during which CT residents payed for her surgery (knee, I think) and then...
What I remember about Kaili McLaren is that as soon she entered a home game, the crowd started anticipating her first great pass. She usually delivered quickly and the crowd went crazy, as they might for a Maya Moore three.
There's one Maya Moore play that was unforgettable, because it told us that she was on a different level than any freshman should be. It was the DePaul game where after a turnover with about 10 seconds left in the game, she chased down the ball handler and stole the ball. BUT--that wasn't...
On the 03-04 teams: I'll grant that no player but DT could have brought those teams to a championship. But Moore, Strother, Turner, and Battle all played in the WNBA between 2 and 5 years. Not top players in the league, but you can't be an average college player and last a few WNBA years...
Yes, a turning point, but for a different reason. After Tennessee, teams perfected the formula that Georgetown had pioneered in its first Uconn game. Don't send anyone (or at most one person) to the offensive boards, drop everyone back as soon as a shot is released. That eliminates Nika...
Great game, fabulous shot. But two big Indiana coaching mistakes in the last 1.5 seconds.
First, as someone else point out, Indiana should have tried to miss the free throw--a three was much more plausible for Iowa than a two, so the extra point didn't matter nearly as much as the extra half...
Maya as the finisher, no doubt. But even though she was just below the greatest UConn pgs, I'd say Renee Montgomery as the person with the ball in the middle. Got down court in an eyeblink.
I've watched the replay and that "held ball" call at 47 seconds still seems bizarre to me. Someone suggested there was a foul called on Griffin for some reason in that sequence. But Griffin wasn't in the game! She came in after the play was stopped and Villanova was given possession. Is it...
I don't usually complain about reffing, but my issue is one call: when a jump ball was called after Nika was pushed and no one (let alone two) had possession and for some crazy reason Villanova shoots free throws in spite of the fact that no one was even plausibly fouled but Nika.
