We played flat. Ugly game for the basketball fan who expect pretty games from UConn 100% of the time. We are a work in progress. We are recovering from injuries, and likely will not gel for a few games after we are back from injuries. And yet, we all know we will have a good chance to win...
Notable results from other NCAA games: 1) Defending champion and #2/3 ranked Vermont lost in OT to Hofstra 2) Akron of the BE beat ND 3) Georgetown and Seton Hall results pending 4) Maryland got by on PK vs NC.
Anything can happen.
First, congrats to Arizona. They played the hand that was given and did everything they were supposed to do to win. It is not easy to win at Gampel to a top 5 team (undermanned or not). They deserved the win under the circumstances.
Second, the only circumstances under our control is FT...
While everyone complains about the too many fouls, as do I, that is not the issue. It is about FT disparity and call consistency that irks me the most. As an example, we are btchn about the too many calls, but happily point out that Alex was 8-8 from the FT line. Well in all likelihood...
Not only missing 2 starters, but this was essentially the 1st real game with our starting PG, and we looked in-synch for the most part, given the experimenting with the lineups.
Looking at the Duke v UCF exhibition box score, the FTA discrepancy was UConn-esq. 13-3 in first half, 23-4 in the second half. I did not see the game, but Boozer's inside game may have justified it, and I am sure the officiating was ACC good, LOL.
