Shiffrin is the greatest woman downhill racer in history and the most dominant female athlete in the world at the moment. The same can be said for Ledecky. Can both be the most dominant? Why not?

Agree with the conclusion of your comment, but will add a minor tweak to the first: Ms. Shiffrin's specialty is slalom. I believe she only trails the legendary Ingemar Stenmark in the number of total slalom wins.

Her fellow American Lindsay Vonn -- who races all events -- is something more of a downhill specialist, having won an Olympic Gold Medal and several seasonal championships in the discipline.

You're right, of course, Dillon. There are 3 distinct categories of downhill racing. I was using "downhill" as a generic reference as all ski racing is downhill. I believe that Mikaela is a few victories behind her female idol, but she will certainly eclipse them all before she's done. Heck, the lady is all of 23.

Marlies Schild is her childhood idol and she passed her last month.

I was [and am] pretty much a No-Nothing about skiing but I had the great fortune for Olde Coach [Warren Witherell] to coach me up [slightly].

Reminder: Mikaela attended Burke Mt. Ski Academy...Warren started that school decades ago and it has produced many elite skiers...Mikaela being the best.

Warren told me that when Mikaela was about 13...maybe her first year at the school...a coach up there saw Warren up on a visit and asked him to come into his office and watch a tape of her. He watched and by the end of it he said he was in tears [Go Olde Coach!!]...completely awed by her skills at such a young age.

I think I have his prediction essentially correct....namely that she would be awesome in the slalom right away and gradually expand her expertise to the giant slalom...then the superG...and lastly [maybe] to the downhill.

Pretty much he nailed it....with still years to go for Mikaela to keep adding to her records.

BTW: he kept an eye on her on his visits up there on and off the slopes and was as impressed with her wonderfulness off as on....dealing with peers etc.

she's won 46 or maybe even 47 if she won again in the past week but Vonn has won 82................it's all about health, Vonn would have had well over 100 victories if not for her numerous injuries................

Somebody is not paying attention. She's got 52 World Cup wins following her 9th win this season last Saturday. Could even be 53 by about 3 EST today.
"Downhill skiing" is a recreational term that differentiates it from cross-country skiing or telemark skiing. The "Downhill" is one of the 4 main disciplines of Alpine World Cup Skiing along with Super G, Giant Slalom and Slalom. Other disciplines that aren't skied as often are Combined (which for the women combines separate runs of Downhill and Slalom), Parallel Slalom (where skiers race head-to-head next to each other) and the City Event, which seems to be just a Parallel Slalom contested within a major city. The last was contested on New Year's Day in Oslo on the outrun of the famous Holmenkollen ski jump.

I watched her last weekend on the Olympic Channel. She's simply the best in the world right now and if she can stay healthy she could be the best ever, and shouldn't have any trouble equaling or bettering Stenmark's win record. Again, staying healthy is the key.

Appreciate the interest in alternate sports in these forums. In reference to former comments, there's 4 distinct categories of "Alpine" ski racing, roughly categorized as "speed" events: Downhill and Super-G, and "technical" events: Giant Slalom and Slalom. One might simplify the difference in noting the spacing between the gates is closer and tighter in the technical events (more turns), and further-apart and wider in speed events (less turns). Slovakian Petra Vlhova was runner-up to every Shiffrin slalom win this season until finally beating her last week in Oslo's City Event, run in a super-exciting head-to-head format in which Shiffrin had bested Vlhova previously. Was a bit surprised to see Shiffrin come back from that and win so convincingly over Vlhova in the subsequent slalom in Zagreb. Of note here is Vlhova is one of the taller women on the World Cup tour, and while that has worked for Vonn in the speed events, it's not necessarily an advantage in slalom. As Shiffrin has matured she has delved further into the speed events with success, such that when it's all said and done, barring injury, (a HUGE "if" in Alpine racing), she could retire as the most decorated Alpine ski racer of all time. On "Nordic" sticks, American Oly gold medalist Jessie Diggins finished 6th in the multi-stage Tour de Ski that culminates with a grueling climb up an alpine ski slope, Alpe de Cermis. Diggins is currently ranked 5th in the overall World Cup standings. This comment might release the Kraken, but here goes... in my humble opinion World Cup Nordic ski racers are the fittest athletes in the world. And oh yeah... Go Utes!

Pinhead nailed it! WC Nordic skiers are crazy fit!! The top skiers have the highest lactate thresholds ever measured! Even us 50-something Nordic racers benefit from this amazing sport:)

Warren was the founder of the Burke Mt Academy and took a great interest in Mikaela.

The young woman is hardly under the radar, greatly admired, esp in Europe but all through the skiing scene.

She regularly wins race by a second or more, the equivalent of a 30-40 point win by UConn.

Mikaela trained at Burke (which happens to be our home ski area) and so we had the opportunity to watch her perfecting her skills with tenacity and determination...the first one on the hill, the last to leave...much in the manner of Geno's drills and approach.

OT: We miss Burke but this season are on a grand tour (thanks to Ikon Pass)...finishing up at Jackson Hole; last week at Big Sky Montana. tomorrow on to Salt Lake.

Vhlova just beat Shiffrin (runner-up) for the second time in slalom this season in heavy snowfall in Flachau. These two have finished first or second in every slalom event this season. Vhlova might challenge Shiffrin for the slalom title, but Shiffrin's more comfortably ahead in the overall WC title per better results including some wins in other disciplines. In other news, Vonn will be making her first appearance of the season this weekend in St. Anton in return from her latest injury. I'm skeptical she can be competitive this season, but I've made the mistake of writing Vonn off in the past after multiple injuries and she's shoved that notion back in my grill repeatedly.
