According to UConn Women's Basketball wikipedia, Liya is now #22 all-time in scoring for the Huskies..!! Her 33 point explosion against St. John's gives her 1,615 total points. Next up is Barb Turner (1,629 pts) and Kia Nurse at 1,674 pts. Also of note, Aaliyah is now #14 on the rebounding all-time list with 876 boards. Olivia Nelson-Ododa is next at 892 rebounds.
Congrats to Liya..!!

Nika is now up to 578 assists for #7 spot all-time..!!
Next up is Sue Bird at 585 career assists..! After that would be Crystal at 599...
Go Nika..!!

Bonus stat = Paige is now #42, passing Megan Walker. Paige has 1,295 points and will pass #41 Morgan Tuck next at 1,298 points.

Go Huskies..!!

It's going to be tough for Liyah to make the 1,000 and 1,000 club. Possible, but tough.

Going into tomorrow's game against Creighton Nika is currently at 606 assists. She is 53 behind Moriah to tie for 1st place. If UConn goes undefeated in Big East play including the BE Tournament and wins the first two at Gampel she only needs to average 6 assists a game to get to 54 assists and break the record with 660.

We have to make our layups, not just to win games but to get Nika that record. No missed shots off any passes from Nika!

Nika is actually at 604 assists, I believe (rather than 606). She is at 171 for the season, so with 29 more she will be at 200 and in doing so will be the first UConn wcbb player to have had 200 or more assists in more than one season. It would be really special if she can reach 660 assists by season end and become the all time career assist leader.

Where ever she ends up on that list she is in elite company and what she's done as a Husky is remarkable. She will graduate with a number of records; single game assists (unless someone gets 16), single season assists, only player with back to back to back double digit assist games and the player with the most double digit assist games in a season and career (by a large margin).

Absolutely love her and happy for all she is and will have achieved. I have no doubt, as she has said, that she actually values the sisterhood and love she is experiencing with her teammates, coaches and fans beyond any of her individual achievements. For her, I believe, the value of all her assists and other accomplishments is in how they have helped her team. Overall she is just a great teammate who loves being a Husky.

After looking at the box scores of the last 4 games I found my error, I gave Nika 4 assists in the SC game when it should have been 2, she had 4 rebounds. So she is at 604 and to pass Moriah she needs 56 more assists which averages out to 6.222 a game for the next 9 games.

Congratulations to Nika on moving up the UConn career assists leader board.

Statistics are a measure of effectiveness and results. Media guides and box scores and do not tell entire story. Head coaches have some control over game, season, and career statistics. Here are two examples.

KLS shot 10-10 behind 3 point line and had scored 40 points in 28 minutes. UConn defeated South Florida 100-44. KLS might have broken Sales scoring record if she played 34+ minutes.

There was a UConn game where CD noticed a player was very close to a triple double. Geno put that player back into the game. I think it was Stef Dolson. She had a triple double in UConn's 114-68 win over Oregon.

Injuries, illness, and other factors - out of a player's control - also contribute to statistics. Here are two examples. Not complaining. Not blaming. Just commenting on situations.

Nika had 284 assists last year because Paige was out with injury. UConn also had Dorka and LLS from the transfer portal. No injury and no transfer portal drastically changes Nika's role. Not her fault and she delivered big time.

UConn has had 5 players end a season with more than 100 assists 3 times. Last time was 2017. Dangerfield, Chong, Nurse, Gabby, and KLS. UConn set the NCAA single season team record with 863 assists. Dangerfield might have had 700+ career assists if she did not have those 4 players.

With 7 today [178 on season], Nika is at 611, and needs 49 to pass MoJeff, and she should be above average in the next three games, as I expect the shooting percentages to be better than today vs. the Blue Jays mainly Senior team [2nd in Big East].

Nika and Aaliyah have been the rocks of UConn wcbb as upperclass women.
Nika Aaliyah 3-23.jpeg

As juniors, each had huge jumps - having career seasons and cementing their places as team leaders. Returning for their Senior seasons each has been asked to adapt and expand their roles, which they have embraced and excelled at. They have the most career starts (Nika (1st) Aaliyah (2nd)) of anyone on the rooster, started all but one game (Nika out for Maryland w/ concussion protocol) in their Junior and senior seasons and have played the most minutes.

Their value to the team goes well beyond their statistical achievements but those have been considerable. Nika has led the team in minutes played and in assists both seasons and in steals last season. Aaliyah has led the team in total and offense rebounds as well as shooting percentage both seasons and points scored last season (currently 2nd this season). Although Nika's points per game has remained at 7.1 pts/gm, over the two seasons her efficiency has improved significantly (fg%% up .059, .481 from .412 and 3pt% up .077, .420 from.343). Aaliyah has been very consistent in both fg% and reb/gm while raising her pt/gm by 1.5.

Wherever these guys end up statistically at the end of their UConn careers and wherever their names appear in the UConn record bocks, their impact and the love they will have given and received over their times as Huskies is undeniable. As fans we have been so very fortunate to have been along for the ride!

Definitely doable. I can picture Nika now if player misses a layup or some other shot off her passes that could have been an assist.

I think that she should already be #1 in assists. So far this season there has been an average of almost 3 blown assists a game that Nika should have gotten because of the missed bunnies. That would give her another 50+ assists for the season which would put her at 660+.

With Uconn, Nika's destiny is defensive player of the year and multiple assists records at Uconn. The big one, most assists in career by one player. Nika will have them all. GO NIKA!!! GO FRESHMEN!!! GO HUSKIES!!!!!

Another record Nika now holds is highest number of assists per game over her career (5.09). She currently edged out Jill Brumbaugh (5.06). Unless her current pace slows drastically over the balance of the season she will leave with that records as well. I noticed also that she was the third fastest player in Husky history to reach 500 assists, she did that in her 106th game. Jill Brumbaugh did it in the late 80's in 99 games and Sue Bird did it in 103 games.

How about the pass to Aaliyah under the basket when she was completely open, and she fumbled the ball.

With Nika's 6 assists against Villanova she now has 192 for the season and 625 for her career. If she can get 8 against Providence she will become the ONLY UConn Women's basketball player to have two 200 or more assists seasons. She now only needs 35 more assists to get the all time record. Go Nika, Go UConn.
