"Gliding around the UConn's buildings at campuses across the Connecticut on a hoverboard is not allowed, officials said Thursday.
In a public safety announcement, university officials said the devices – which are two-wheeled, self-balancing and motorized – also cannot be stored or charged in any university buildings including dorms.
"We definitely growth in popularity and a growth in numbers as the semester was going on," said Stephanie Reitz, the university spokeswoman. Despite this, few students could be seen riding them on campus, she noted.
With that growth in popularity, the university began looking into regulations, she said. Also, recent claims of the devices catching fire drew the university's attention.
"We started looking at it more closely in the fall semester," she said. The ban was effective immediately."
