New Haven Promise | UConn Commitment

December 2015

The University of Connecticut is pleased to announce a new partnership with the New Haven

Promise program, providing a commitment for financial support to New Haven Promise

Scholars who choose to enroll at UConn. This agreement will directly impact access and

affordability for students from the New Haven area. Below is summary of the details of the

agreement between New Haven Promise and UConn:

  • Beginning with Fall 2016 new freshmen, UConn pledges to offer a minimum of $5000 in

scholarships and/or grants per year to students who are recognized by New Haven

Promise as Promise Scholars. The award is renewable to the student for four years of

study at UConn.

  • New Haven Promise will identify the eligible Promise Scholars to UConn annually in

order to facilitate awarding of the UConn scholarships/grants.
  • The UConn Commitment is being funded through foundation funds, which were

provided through the generous support of donors to the UConn Foundation, as well as

institutional resources.

  • The UConn Commitment is available to New Haven Promise scholars who enter any of

UConn’s campuses immediately following high school graduation, beginning with the

entering class of Fall 2016.

  • Currently, 197 students from New Haven are enrolled at UConn and 132 are New Haven

Promise Scholars. There is no limit to the number of New Haven Promise Scholars who

will benefit from this new award.

  • The agreement between UConn and New Haven Promise is limited to three years, at

which time it may be renewed or revised. Should the agreement be revised or expire,

there will be no detriment to students currently enrolled at UConn through the

agreement.

haha. Ya. I wish that UConn was a little more transparent about what they are doing. Tuition hikes for some are to offset tuition for others. If they just said that the plan is to charge the middle and upper class majority groups more money in order to support the poor and middle class minority groups, then I could respect that stance.

They are really trying to avoid this because they know it will have public backlash and the backlash would be legitimate in some ways. However, the university needs to stand behind it's beliefs and not try to tip toe around their current mission, which is to serve certain students over others.

This is the way all universities operate. They play Robin Hood and it is even more prevalent at private, well endowed universities. As a general rule, private universities with the highest tuition are more endowed and have the most financial aid available. If you are fortunate to get into UConn tuition is still a huge bargain.
