Whether people will acknowledge it or not, it seems upgrading the football program to FBS with the Big East conference really did put our school on the national stage. If we were in the MAC for football and A-10 for basketball, everything would be different. When college hockey fans bring up the Ed O'Bannon case and what kind of an impact it'll have on collegiate sports, they normally consider us amongst those who would benefit from a split since we also upgraded hockey. Perfect timing for us.
The past administrators did contribute to turning UConn into a national-regarded (and somewhat internationally-regarded) university. It was mostly timing. If we went FBS/D-1A long ago, we wouldn't be in the AAC.
What the school is becoming is obviously one of our selling points. Whoever got the school into the Big East saved UConn.
